Wide receiver, wide receiver, wide receiver... It seems to be the the #1 need among Rams fans? This year's free agent crop actually has a fairly rich of talented pass catching stars. One of the free agents that will garner a ton of attention is New Orleans Saints receiver Marques Colston. Stephen Corkran of the Contra Costa Times thinks Colston may be at the top of the Raiders shopping list? Would he be the guy to fill the Rams need at wide receiver? He has the stats (see after the break) to make a valid case for pursuing him, but what would he cost? Word today that the Rams are shopping for a "CAP Guru" in the form of Omar Khan may signal that the Rams are thinking of making a serious move in free agency this year.
The Saints have some serious spending to do this year if they plan to keep their powerful offense intact. Drew Brees' new contract is going to cost a pretty penny. They have some tough choices ahead. Will Colston be a luxury they decide they can do without?

Colston is a stud
Would love him on the Rams.
Horcrux7 - February 9, 2012
I suppose he's worth around $5 mill
IMO, if you’re going to pay a player $6+ million per year, he better have played in a Pro Bowl at one time or another. That’s not to say that Colston shouldn’t have been there, though.
Joe Mazzi - February 9, 2012
if so
if he can be had at $5 million, sign him immediately.
itsvon - February 9, 2012
Sent you an e-mail
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
Of all the free agent WR....
I would want Colston the most
Rcoon1307 - February 9, 2012 via mobile
What kinda poll is this?
Where is the cap going to be at? Who are we resigning? What are those values? Who’s the new GM? Can he(or she) negotiate? Answers those first, then you can ask how much a random free agent wide receiver should be paid, down to the 1 millionth.
Boofer - February 9, 2012
By deciding on how much he's worth, you get to see how much of the Rams CAP would be allocated to him and how much is left.
There are a couple of articles on the front page that tell you more about the money available to spend. I just didn’t want to re-hash the numbers, but I’ll include them in future FA posts
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
$$$$$
I honestly don’t think the Rams are ready to spend that kind of money on a single player… On the Rams official MB (which sucks compared to this), a poster listed a lot of FA that the Rams should persue and all of which would be fundamental in creating a base for the Rams.. By that, I mean starters on offense and defense who will be on the field 90% of a game when it’s their time… With that, I think the Rams are going to go after smaller names but with equal talent and save some money while doing it. It’d be great to have this guy on the field for the Rams, but I don’t think this is the year to get someone like him.
RamsIchor - February 9, 2012
If you were given the choice between Colston and Lloyd at the $5 mil per year number, who would you choose?
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
Colston obviously....
But that’s just by going off of namesake alone and what I’ve seen from the two players playing. Granted, Lloyd does have amazing catch ability and jump, I think I’d have to go with the Saints WR on this one.
RamsIchor - February 9, 2012
Over 1K Yards
Receiving in 5 out of 6 seasons. Only lost the ball 4 times in six season with all those touches. Consistent and reliable WR. I would open the negotiations with an offer of a 3 year deal; at 3.5 mil per year.
ValdezY - February 9, 2012
I am about to send you an e-mail... :-)
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
Colston and Lloyd?
That would be a sweet combo. We already know what it’s like to have only one reliable option at WR, so I think they should try to keep Lloyd and sign a stud to pair him with
willEYEam - February 9, 2012
Totally agree! That would be a dream come true!
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
Let Lloyd crawl back to NE
sign Colston for 5mil, draft Blackmon, put DA in the slot
…..give em all some super sticky aerosol adhesive
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
Why doesn't Duct Tape make gloves? lol
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
Because they are idiots!
long before the Stickum post, I sent them a pair of homemade Duct Tape gloves in an envelope. I’m positive that they got them. No call back…..
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
Bastards! lol
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
And/Or...
try finding a “Colston” in the 7th rd like NO did!!! DAMN DEVANEY!!!
mcihaelT - February 9, 2012
Or we could trade back and get Alshon Jeffery
And have our own Marques Colstonish player for less $$$
Josh Wehrle - February 9, 2012
Or a Mike Williamsish player...
Not sure how I feel about Jeffrey at this point.
modano9 - February 9, 2012
Yeah the combines gonna be huge for him
Josh Wehrle - February 9, 2012
Also,
Stanford Routt was just released by the raiders. Any interest?
Josh Wehrle - February 9, 2012
Hmmm? He was caught in the Raiders revolving WR door, and never really got a chance to shine.
Good catch! He wouldn’t cost much either
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
... Stanford Routt is a corner.
RAMpage28 - February 9, 2012
I must be thinking of a different guy? Oops! lol
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
Any way I have interest in Routt.
The knock on him is that he commits a lot of penalties but here is some thing interesting about his 2010 season. He and Nnamdi Asomugha teamed together to form the #1 CB tandem in the NFL surrendering a stingy 38% completion rating and only 4 TD’s given up rivaling the Jets tandem of Revis and Cromartie at 43% and 10 TD’s. Routt himself would finish with 10 lowest Opp QB rating (69%) and the 2nd lowest comp % in the NFL among all corners behind Revis
RAMpage28 - February 9, 2012
He's definitely worth a shot
Josh Wehrle - February 9, 2012
More random things about Routt
In track, he was a unanimous All-District selection, as well as an All-America selection, and was also a state qualifier in both the 200 meter dash and the 4 × 400 metres relay team. As a junior, he ran the ninth-fastest 200-meter dash in the nation. At the 2005 NFL Combine, Routt was recorded as having the fastest 40 yard dash with a time of 4.25 seconds.
RAMpage28 - February 9, 2012
Id say
Of this did happen and Lloyd left, we trade down with Washington and take blackmon there, for some reason I think he could drop there, Colston at the 1 and Blackmon at the 2 would be great..
RG31 - February 9, 2012 via mobile
To get Colston...
the Rams are going to have to overpay him to come here. My guess is any big named free agents going to want 30% over what a decent team is gonna pay them if the Rams want them to come here. Six million or more, bank on it!
Da Rams! - February 9, 2012
Could be right. I hope Fisher changes possible player opinions
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
BTW. I don't think the Rams should even bother going after big names in free agency right now.
They’ll want monster huge contracts and won’t live up to those contracts. Look at Albert Haynesworth. The Rams should get depth players and decent priced starters through free agency and use the draft to build the talent base of the team. Otherwise they’ll face salary cap hell before the team has a championship team together.
Da Rams! - February 9, 2012
it pains me to say this
but I’d be ok if Fat Albert were a Ram next season. And I’ll say that only because he was a damn monster under Fisher before. I can’t imagine he just loses all that talent
Clearly, him and Shanahan got into a dooky slinging contest, and he gave up on them. If I had $100 mil, and hated my coach, I’d be taking cat naps on the field too!
I’ll forget that he played for the Pats or Bucs, but only because it helps me cope with what I just said
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
I suggested this and I think it's worth a shot.
RAMpage28 - February 9, 2012
I see ZERO chance
that it could get worse at DT
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
With a regressed Robbins and an old as dirt Bannan paired with some other no bodies
Yeah it can’t get much worse.
RAMpage28 - February 9, 2012
Only thing I'm concerned about is if Washburn or Schwartz are the reason Haynesworth did so well and not Fisher.
RAMpage28 - February 9, 2012
You could flip flop your descriptions of those two
And it would still fit perfectly lol
Rcoon1307 - February 9, 2012 via mobile
We could give him a try. He'd probably be cheap too? He can even say he wanted to be in STL all along, that N.E. and T.B. were just stops along the way to "The Lou" ! lol
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
I dunno. Fisher was the only coach to get something outta Albert.
Never say never. Though Albert may have shovel dirt on his own grave as far as NFL jobs are concerned.
Da Rams! - February 9, 2012
dude if haynesworth couldnt even crack the lineup in N.E.......
with a coach like belichick? he isnt going to come to st. louis to play any harder for fisher. dudes an overpaid, washed up, overweight, ticking timebomb…who i DONT want on my rams.
Mark Jaramillo - February 9, 2012
so how do you explain the explosive, best-in-the-league talent
that he had in Tennessee? Look, I’m not saying that I KNOW it’s going to work out, or that we should pay him a contract similar to the ones the Skins paid him. Quite the contrary…
I’m saying that it’s something worth thinking about, and if the price is right, I’m down. If he ends up a Ram, which might be highly unlikely, I’ll trust that Fisher thinks he can get something out of him. And that, for now, is enough for me…
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
DC...
that “explosive…best in the league talent” was 6 yrs ago in tennessee. what has he done since he got paid…………….?………….im waiting.
Mark Jaramillo - February 9, 2012
It's clear you've got your opinion, and I've got mine
but since you’re waiting, his best season was in 2008. 8.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.
In my best guesstimation, that was 3 seasons ago, but who’s counting.
You’re quoting me, lots of dots, and waiting proved to be the winning argument there, buddy. He’s clearly not worth giving a shot…
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
me stating that "fat" albert got himself 86'd from washington
and was cut by the patriots would warrant a “winning” argument as well, so we do agree on something. yes…hes clearly NOT worth giving a shot. the dude is a cancer in the locker room, and we can also agree, the guy is a walking ticking timebomb. anger issue’s have been his downfall.
and once he has you on his shitlist? he’s not going to do SHIT! on the field…we can ask shanahan on that one.
Mark Jaramillo - February 9, 2012
why would we ask Shanahan, though?
is he coaching the Rams next season? I’d like to ask Jeff Fisher, who is our coach, if Albert was a cancer in the locker room in Tennessee…
Your point about him being unhappy in Washington is valid. He was however hired to play in a 4-3 defense, which then changed before he got there, when he was informed he’d play NT in a 3-4. His asshole coach also tried to embarrass him by making him do drills, simply to prove a point because he didn’t come to that particular asshole coaches offseason workouts. I suppose with a check for $40+ million sitting on your coffee table at home, and as the best DT in football, you’d back down if a guy who won a couple of SB’s because he had one of the greatest QB’s of all time was trying to push your buttons and embarrass you too
I’m only defending Haynesworth because you’re putting me in a position to, with your aggressive ‘I know better’ mentality. I’ll stick by what I initially said, and state that at the right price, I’m interested. And again, if by some odd fate he ends up in a Rams uniform next season, I’ll trust that it’s because Fisher thought it was a good move for our team. Realistic? Probably not. But I’ll hope that if he’s not on the team in 2012, that it’s not because your opinion was valued by the St. Louis Rams any more than mine was
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
where did i say that "i know better"... where?
you can state opinions till your blue in the face for all i care, thats what TST is for, but dont try to turn anything around on what “you said” and “what i said” b.s. bottom line dude, you like haynesworth, i dont. ok? oh and by the way, he went back to a 4-3 defense in new england this yr, what happened? “i put you into a position to defend haynesworth” LOL!
Mark Jaramillo - February 9, 2012
Let me type slowly for you, Mark
If the bottom line were that I ‘liked him and you don’t then you would’ve left it at that, and not commented about you don’t want him on ‘your’ team.
And you keep referencing his play on the Pats, as if I don’t know his performance was far worse then what it was ‘six years ago’ which wasn’t even his prime.
At any rate, here’s to Albert being a Ram in 2012. I’ll come find you when it happens
DCRamFan - February 10, 2012
thanks for letting know how sensitive you are...
ill just get to the point next time…deal?
Mark Jaramillo - February 10, 2012
still waiting for the point actually
unless its that you just don’t want him
DCRamFan - February 10, 2012
any free agent WR would be good
AS LONG AS HIS NAME ISN’T MIKE SIMS-WALKER……DEVANEY YOU DUMB ASS….)(*&^&^&^%&
fearsomefoursum - February 10, 2012
I still think Pierre Garcon could come really cheap
I think he’s making next to league minimum and was nearly non-existent last year (go figure). I just think there’s going to be A LOT of interest if he indeed hits the FA market
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
I agree with you. I have a post about him and Wayne coming up in the next day or two
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
How about Meachem from NO?
modano9 - February 9, 2012
I like that idea. He'll have suitors though.
Da Rams! - February 9, 2012
I thought we would be the more likely to be let go by New Orleans then Colston.
RAMpage28 - February 9, 2012
It will be about the $$$ Colston is going to get almost double what Meachem will get in FA
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
Exactly the reason the Saints will dump Colston.
Da Rams! - February 9, 2012
Ya can't see him staying when the have Brees, Colston, and Nicks as FA's.
Plus they have Henderson still there who does basically the same thing.
modano9 - February 9, 2012
I want stevie johnson
Young, productive, cheap, and played in a competitive division against good corners
Ram_Redemption - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Mario manningham would be good as well
Josh Wehrle - February 9, 2012
For whatever reason I don't think he ends up even a good #2 IMO.
I think he will get paid and I don’t want the Rams to be the ones.
modano9 - February 9, 2012
I certainly don't want to over-pay him
if we can get him for a reasonable amount (say 2-3 million), and we think he’s a fit, I say bring him in.
Josh Wehrle - February 9, 2012
definitely another good option
I can dig it!
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
Lloyd and Johnson might make a good combo.
Da Rams! - February 9, 2012
Doubt we afford both
Sooooo If you could only pick one…..?
Ram_Redemption - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Johnson with his drops an young age over Lloyd and his Paycheck McD required system.
RAMpage28 - February 9, 2012
Agreed johnson and jack son hung out laast week
Hope he did some lobbying
Ram_Redemption - February 9, 2012 via mobile
I would love Stevie Johnson as a Ram.
One of the few who gave Revis trouble in their match up.
modano9 - February 9, 2012
Johnson
more talent, he’s younger, and he might cost the same amount.
Josh Wehrle - February 9, 2012
I like Colston.
I wish one of our own 7th rounders would turn out to be as good…
Le Ram - February 9, 2012
I want to do a swirbian, caps-filled, strikethrough-laden, heavily misspelled
’we’re never going to get any of these guys, so get real because, of course, I told you so’ bit right now…
….but I won’t. I’m working on getting better each and every day
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
Just wait til they sign elsewhere
Jswirb will do it for you
Ram_Redemption - February 9, 2012 via mobile
Baby steps... lol
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
Something tells me Colstons gonna be a Raider.
I hate to say it, but I can readily see him in black and silver than blue and gold.
Da Rams! - February 9, 2012
why do you think the raiders would cut routt
RAMSALLTHEWAY - February 9, 2012
Cap move probably
On February 24, 2011, the Raiders re-signed Stanford with a three year, $31.5 million contract to remain in Oakland. Routt was to earn a maximum of $31.5 million during his contract, including a guaranteed $20 million over the first two years.
RAMpage28 - February 9, 2012
exactly
money for colston
RAMSALLTHEWAY - February 9, 2012
Just a hunch here...
Colston looks like a Raider receiver. They’ll go after him big time. I’d almost put money on it he’s wearing silver and black next preseason.
Da Rams! - February 9, 2012
it would make sense
the Raiders have some pretty damn good players, they just can’t seem to put it all together.
WR is definitely a need, and they clearly won’t get one in the draft, since they essentially won’t have one
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
I said this in another post, but this is who I want to target at receiver:
1. Lloyd/FA/Draft pick (Stevie Johnson, Vincent Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Dwaye Bowe, Marques Colston, Djax, Blackmon, Mohamed Sanu, Dwight Jones, Kendall Wright, Alshon Jeffery, Michael Floyd)
2. FA/Draft Pick (Stevie Johnson, Vincent Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Dwaye Bowe, Marques Colston, Djax, Blackmon, Mohamed Sanu, Dwight Jones, Kendall Wright, Alshon Jeffery, Michael Floyd, Mario Manningham, Robert Meachem)
3. Amendola
4. FA/Draft Pick (Mario Manningham, Robert Meachem, Jerome Simpson (if no more legal troubles), Steve Smith (eagles), Early Doucet, Joe Adams, Marvin McNutt, Tommy Streeter, Rueben Randle, T.Y Hilton, etc)
5. Salas
6. Clayton/Pettis
7. Curry/other special teams player if needed
Josh Wehrle - February 9, 2012
I can dig it....clearly it would be a completely different core
the only one I’d hesitate on is Steve Smith of the Eagles. He didn’t do a whole lot last year with his 4mil contract
but if we’ve got either 3 new receivers next year, via FA or draft, we’ll be much better for it!
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
I think Smith was caght on a "clicky" team that never really let him in. I just don't see him as a #1 WR though. If you are going to spend long $$$, why not get a #1 WR?
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
I agree he's definitely not #1
buckeye’s list, in terms of depth chart, looks great to me. I’d be ok if he were our 3, but much like him, I’d like to see a nice FA acquisition coupled with a young stud in the draft
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
That would be great compared to last year.
I’ll play along with your guideline:
1. Stevie Johnson
2. Sanu (Wright or Floyd assumed taken)
3. Amendola
4. Meachem or McNutt
5. Salas
6. Pettis (assumed Clayton is gone)
7. Curry
modano9 - February 9, 2012
I really don't think Stevie is gone.
The Bills will lock Stevie and Fred for the long haul, and rightfully so. That was their offense.
douchiedude - February 10, 2012
I want
Larry Fitz. can we trade J. Smith and Gibson and our 3rd ro
ECURam87 - February 9, 2012 via Android app
If you get AZ to make that trade, and you are officially the King of TST
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
don't stop there ECU
they can have Kehl, King, and DX
DCRamFan - February 9, 2012
Fair is fair, right? lol
Douglas M - February 9, 2012
Fitz is a two first-rounders at least kind of guy.
douchiedude - February 10, 2012
I might be wrong,
But isn’t marques colston one of those guys who has undergone microfracture surgery and has since lost all the cartilage between his knees i.e. Kobe? If that’s the case, I’d tread carefully because thats a type of injury where you are in fact a ticking timebomb.
For some reason, I cannot pinpoint the WR i would want in this offense. If there were some way to get Kenny Britt or his likeness in the draft, thats what we should do (sans injury risk). I don’t really wanna invest in a colston or manningham and am skeptical that VJ and DJ just want their money and don’t really care about winning.
fletcherisland - February 9, 2012
Anyone have a good site to go to to find out how much each Ram player will count against the 2012 cap?
jmo53 - February 9, 2012 via Android app
For under 6 Million
He won’t leave New Orleans. We will have enough to keep him. He will probably get around 8-10 Million on the market
Alex Swift - February 10, 2012
I'd love to know...
…what some of you are smoking, and where I can get some. Colston’s average season is 74.83 catches, 1040 yds, 13.9 YPC, and 8 TDs. And those numbers include his career-worst 2008 season. He’s been a reliable 3rd down and red-zone target for Brees. There’s not a chance in the world he signs anywhere for less than six mil per. I even saw in the comments 3.5 per year. If the Rams could get him for 6 mil, that’d be a miracle. Most likely he will re-sign with N.O., but no matter where he ends up, it will probably cost at least 8-9 mil per.
I don’t know what Detroit’s cap situation looks like, but if I’m them, I’m thinking he’d be a perfect compliment to Megatron’s deep play ability. And for all of Philly’s speed, they could use a big body. Given that DeSean Jackson’s a head case, they should consider going after him to pair with Macklin instead of DJ. Same goes for Pittsburgh putting him with Mike Wallace to replace an aging Hines Ward.
Basically, if the Saints don’t re-sign him, there will be a number of teams calling his agent (most of them more attractive on paper than STL). The notion of the Rams getting him for 5 mil is a pipe dream.
mikemcd41 - February 10, 2012
Rams beat Saints this year. lol
jmo53 - February 10, 2012 via Android app
Agreed mikemc41
Colston would be well worth the pickup……Pay him, he’s worth it.
Steady stud of a reciever.
Veteran, who catches the ball in tight spaces better than Blackman.
But,
Blackman has more breakaway ability.
I just don’t see NO letting him go, and If I were Colston, I would want a ring in front of me!
