Matt Kalil has gained 15 pounds on a steady diet of microphones and recorders.
Yesterday, in talking about Matt Kalil and my Prospect Playbook piece over at MTD, I noted the lack of bulk in his lower body made it difficult for him to destroy defenders in the run game. I also said in that MTD piece that:
Kalil is honest enough to know what his inadequacies are, and he knows his limitations. That's a sign of an intelligent player.
If Kalil's most recent entry in his diary over at the Sporting News is any indication, I hit that one on the head.
In it, he details his nutritional regimen, and that with the time to really focus on eating right (>5,500 calories a day...) and working out (9-10:50am and 2:30-4pm), he's been able to add 15 pounds. And not Andre Smith pounds. Here's Kalil:
I’ve gained about 15 pounds, but I’ve also lost body fat while gaining weight. It’s a healthy weight gain.
Somebody's getting ready for the combine. And he notes that his former teammate Tyron Smith, selected 9th overall in last year's draft and the first offensive tackle taken last April, went from playing in the 270-lb. range to weighing in at 307 lbs. in the combine.
Kalil's always looked capable of adding some weight. It's a matter of adding the right weight, keeping it in range and doing so without losing his athleticism or foot speed. We'll get a sense of that during the combine, but it's worth keeping in mind moving forward.

Thanks for that Andre Smith picture, 3k.
Although, I much prefer his Wikipedia picture.
That look on his face…. just priceless.

I just watched "Bull Durham" for the first time in a while

Well good sir
I have never seen this “Bull Durham” but if it doesn’t involve us getting plaxico burress and randy moss and T.O. then I’m not interested. GOD HAS SPOKEN!RAMpage28 - February 17, 2012

Wow, I love Matt Kalil so much :3
This puts him in the 310-315 range for sure. He has always had a great frame, you could always tell from it that he could put on some more good weight without losing athleticism. I’m still okay with trading down, but I REALLY want Kalil at the same time…
douchiedude - February 17, 2012
I wouldn't care if we traded down at this point.
I would gladly take Kalil at this point.
RAMpage28 - February 17, 2012
Kalil at 295 was overblown to begin with.
There was no doubt he would add good weight before the combine. With his frame he could potentially put on more weight if wanted and still retain his quickness IMO. Not out of the question he could play at around 325 with some time with an NFL nutrition and strength program.
modano9 - February 17, 2012
At the start of the season,
I read that Kiffin allowed Kalil to play at 300 lbs (one of the few), although he was listed as 295 the entire year. Either way, he’s got NFL weight on now.
douchiedude - February 17, 2012
Finally a reason not to trade down.
But if Cleveland offers their 4rth and 22nd, which is the rumor today, I say we take it and don’t look back.
Scato - February 17, 2012
agreed.
RAMpage28 - February 17, 2012
I agree,
that still gives us a legit shot at Kalil. Hopefully Minnesota would look to take Blackmon :D:D
douchiedude - February 17, 2012
They do need another WR for Ponder and Harvin has Migraine problems.
There is a legit chance that the Vikings could take Blackmon.
RAMpage28 - February 17, 2012
Given Ponder's mobility as well
that is a realistic option indeed.

JOE WEBB FOR QB!
RAMpage28 - February 17, 2012
Is Cleveland even needing to trade up?
I don’t know how serious a look Minnesota would give RG III, but I’d figure they would stick with Ponder. With the Colts getting Luck and The Rams already having a QB, wouldn’t RG III just fall to the Browns at 4? And knowing Holmgren, I’d imagine he would want to build through the draft so giving up two first rounders for one just to get a QB seems unlikely. Heck, I could see Cleveland trading down out of the 4th pick to get more picks.
mb44 - February 17, 2012 via mobile
Cleveland would want to trade up to ensure getting RG3 since the Skins would probably also be interested.
RAMpage28 - February 17, 2012
The problem is if Cleveland is gonna rely on waiting for RGIII, they won't get him.
If they don’t trade, Washington will. If not with us, Minnesota said they’re willing to trade down too,
douchiedude - February 17, 2012
True.
I didn’t consider Minnesota also willing to trade down when thinking about it. I still believe Cleveland would prefer draft picks over RG III. I don’t know how legit it is they’d consider him regardless of what’s been said. Washington, however, if there’s any team that I could see be more than willing to trade picks just to ensure a quarterback, it’s them. Let’s hope someone will trade with us. I’d like to see what this new regime will do when given more picks to build on
mb44 - February 18, 2012 via mobile
Maybe its just me but
I am willing to bet we trade down. I got a Benjamin on it at work that we do trade down.
jmo53 - February 18, 2012 via Android app
You're betting people!?
That’s a good bet though to people who don’t follow the Rams :p
douchiedude - February 18, 2012
Got another one that we get at least 7 wins too.
jmo53 - February 18, 2012 via Android app
I'm cautiously optimistic lol.
Not getting my hopes up until at the very least after I see our FA and draft.
douchiedude - February 19, 2012
Have faith
I know the Rams have been down. I just have a feeling we are on the rise.
jmo53 - February 18, 2012 via Android app
It don't matter what he weighs, we ain't drafting this guy.
Da Rams! - February 17, 2012
Or are we?
RAMpage28 - February 17, 2012
Real photo of Kalil...
Are you sure you want this guy ?
howie43 - February 17, 2012
Meh. Kalil is no slam dunk.
Lightweight = not good on the OL.
Danny Kralemann - February 17, 2012
He's Joe Thomas AND Jake Long's
height and weight with the added 15 lbs.
douchiedude - February 17, 2012
Get him
If we trade down Minn will grab him quick, they are salivating that we trade out of the spot so they can get his ass. Clev will play games all the way up to the last min just to try and mess with us, but either way we win due to other teams wanting RGIII. If Cleveland is serious about RGIII they will pull the trigger and we might still get Kalil, I doubt it due to Minn all over this guy and not so much on Blackmon. My suggestion is screw the rest draft Kalil, nab a FA wide receiver and and OLB and call it a day and draft our needs with what we got. Kalil is going to be a beast and if we don’t get him the Rams will regret it!!!
laramsfn - February 17, 2012
REGRET is a forever word !
