Back in 2008, Jacob Bell was one of the hot commodities at the offensive guard position. The St. Louis Rams bit hard on Bell, signing him to a six-year $36 million contract.
Bell came to the Rams after four years with Jeff Fishers old gig – the Tennessee Titans. He was drafted in the 5th round out of Miami (of Ohio). As a rookie, Bell made an impact right away. He played in 15 games with 14 starts at left guard (his current position).
Fast forward four years, and Bell is now on the verge of being ousted out of Rams Park. What happened?
A look back at Bell after the jump.

With the Rams, Bell became known as more of a pass-blocking guard rather than a mauling, run-blocking lineman. The old regime preferred road-grading guys, a la Harvey Dahl. So essentially, Bell became the odd man out, hence his contract being restructured into a one-year deal before the 2011 season.
But now with his former head coach back in town, can Bell return to form?
With the Titans, Bell was a key member of the offensive line that helped a guy named Chris Brown – not the singer – reach 1,000 rushing yards back in 2004. In 2006, he helped another running back, Travis Henry, rush for 1,110 yards. In his final year with the Titans (2007), the line he was part of paved the way for a total of 2,109 rushing yards – good for 5th in the league.
Maybe with his former staff here in St. Louis, Bell can regain his form. It would be considered as a fresh start.
Yet there are those who say Fisher and his staff in Tennessee let him walk for a reason. Who knows?
Jacob will be 31 once the season starts. I know that still gives him a few years as an offensive lineman, but has he wore out his welcome here? What do y’all think?

Give him a second chance...
Here’s the deal. The Rams are hard pressed at nearly every position… We have limited cap space, but NEED to do a MAJOR overhaul of the entire roster… This team is rebuilding, but it’s not all going to be done in year one. I say get rid of Smith and keep Bell…. Focus on finding talent in more needed positions, and offer bell a year to get straightned out. If it doesn’t happen, he’ll see the door.

I dunno... thats a lot of cash being spent on mediocrity
At the very least they should test the open market to see what free agents are available. Bell and Smith are major anchors around the teams necks with their salary and lackluster efforts.

If I had a nickle for this line.
“We have limited cap space, but NEED to do a MAJOR overhaul of the entire roster” I would be buying the Dodgers.
Da Rookie - February 18, 2012
thing is though, we really dont need a major overhaul.
our team goes back to learning the basics like tackling and catching and we have a solid club. if bell comes back on a one year trial bases with a relatively small salary, i wouldnt complain. smith needs to go though, or at least do a major restructure of his contract. we just need some playmakers and we can have a pretty good team.

We should keep Bell if for nothing more than depth.

Looking back at Fisher's time in TEN
He and his staff developed some damn good lineman, and none were drafted higher than round two, with only Michael Roos—a perennial pro bowler—being drafted before round 4. I know this has nothing to do with Bell, per se, but I like the idea that Fisher and his staff will be able to turn this O-Line around.

What's this picture in the shirt?
I have yet to see it.

Thanks, man! Ed Hardy sure has the corner on that douche market.
KDidz - February 17, 2012
This is a decision Fisher is well placed to make.
He let him go the first time and can see what has happened here. If he feels that an older version of the guy who was on his team is worth it, then he can take a chance. However, if he was originally willing to unload the guy on whoever years ago, then we have our answer there as well.
It will be nice when the puzzle starts to come together.

We can find depth thru the draft or free agency. Cut hiz ass loose. And lets start over!
kevio3000 - February 17, 2012 via Android app
I can’t imagine a scenario where he’s back.
Rams need bigger and mean guys up front. J Bell, J Smith, and J Brown are not tough enough anymore.
Danny Kralemann - February 17, 2012
Didn't he lose a significant amount of weight...
after signing with the Rams ?
howie43 - February 17, 2012
What about Evan Mathis?
He’s plays LG for the Eagles and was rated the best guard in the league last season. If I’m not mistaken, he’s a free agent this year.
Dekaj234 - February 17, 2012
Yes he is a free agent and he didn't let up a single sack last season.
I would be ecstatic if he was on our team.
RAMpage28 - February 17, 2012
I actually mentioned him on my recommended free agent post
Shameless plug.
RAMpage28 - February 17, 2012
Oh, you.
Joe Mazzi - February 17, 2012 via mobile
And if anyone cares.
Hes answering questions on reddit right now. Most are non football related and he’s fucking hilarious!
Dekaj234 - February 17, 2012
Adios douchacho!
DCRamFan - February 17, 2012
What is Bell making next year?
Jason Smith and Steven Jackson should be asked to restructure their contracts. Bartell should be cut along with Poppinga and Robbins. That should free up some dough to sign a WR free agent, OLB free agent and maybe Finnegan.
Mister T - February 17, 2012
I think like $5mil towards the cap
but we’re on the hook for $4.4mil reguardless so cutting him would only save $600,000.
jmo53 - February 17, 2012 via Android app
Agree with all this
but not sure if Jax would restructure his contract. Maybe he just wants to win though.
jmo53 - February 17, 2012 via Android app
He's a FA
Got his contract restructure to a 1-year deal before the 2011 season
EddieP - February 19, 2012
If the guys can find replacements in the draft in later rounds ....
..,.moveon.org. If the Titans thought they could get the above situation to work then, can they repeat?VETT - February 18, 2012
