The San Francisco 49ers have given cornerback Shawtae Spencer permission to seek a trade. Could the St. Louis Rams be interested?
The San Francisco 49ers have granted cornerback Shawntae Spencer permission to seek a trade. According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, the St. Louis Rams could be among the potential suitors.
Spencer failed to crack the starting lineup in 2011, after being a starter the two season prior. He fell all the way to fifth on the depth chart.
Fifth corners typically do not make $3.3 million, which is what Spencer is due this season. San Francisco may be more motivated to deal with Spencer due such a large sum. Of course, teams could wait them out, knowing that he will most likely be cut.
The Rams reportedly have eyes for Titans free agent cornerback Cortland Finnegan, who will fetch far more than $3.3 million in free agency.
According to Pro Football Focus, Spencer played just 14 snaps in 2011. Injuries kept the 30-year old on the shelf for a significant amount of the season. As a full time starter in 2010, Spencer had a -7.9 rating from PFF and a -4.8 in coverage. Sam Bradford torched Spencer in Week 16 of 2010, completing six of eight passes against him for 91 yards.
Spencer was a little better in 2009, grading out with a 5.4 rating overall and in coverage. He might an upgrade over Justin King or some of the others on the bottom of the Rams depth chart, but he is not a player the Rams would be well advised to invest $3.3 million in this season.

Disappointed
That’s what I’d be if this was our FA acquisition of a CB. He’s old, and so is the rest of our defense. Thanks, but no thanks

Pass. Oh and other news
People are saying smith is pretty much out and brown could be right behind him
Ram_Redemption - February 17, 2012 via mobile
Looks like Brown is due about $4mil
but cutting him only saves $600,000. I want him gone but is it really worth it for the savings? I was very disappointed when I read this.

Injuries? 30-years old? Demoted to fifth string? Wants $3.3 million? Sucked last year??? I’ll take a pass….

Wow! A blockbuster!
Why the hell would we want this guy? And trading for him? Only if they pick up the remaining money on his contract and he plays for free with us. And only if Justin King was the player we traded

Would make no sense... I would keep Gordy before trading for him

Meh
Not interested

Finnegan FTW
and then hope for Fletcher to stay healthy

Not Sure
But didn’t we have enough players who got injured this past year? Do we need another? Didn’t the Rams break a record this year for season ending injuries to a D Backfield this year? If not I am sure they came close and I hope to never see that many injuries again, hell to the whole friken team let alone the Def backs. NOPE concentrate on Finnegan, not this guy!!
laramsfn - February 17, 2012
hell no the guy is garbage Jeff wont even look at him ,but Van will take any one lmfao
Rammon105 - February 17, 2012
I would take him over King any day of the week....3 times on Sunday (get it lol)
would be a decent Nickel/Dime guy if he’s cheaper then that 3.3 mil and depending on what we have to give up…..actually I wouldn’t trade for him unless its King, we need all our picks.
