Yesterday the Browns made a move to add Matt Kalil. Today, we are faced with yet ANOTHER trade, this time the Steelers (led by Rcoon1307) are moving up. They had to fork over their 1st, 2nd and 5th round picks this year along with a 1st and 3rd next year to make the deal. Hardly chump change. Who is worth that much to them? Let's see:
|
Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
|
|
Pick Grade:
A-
|
The Steelers have lost starting running back Rashard Mendenhall to a torn ACL and he will miss the entire 2012 NFL season (and might never be the same). He was having a terrible year anyway- his yards per carry were way down and there is no capable RB on the Steelers roster to carry the rock for 4 quarters. The Steelers have promised to go back to the "old steeler way" which means running the ball and playing D. Cutting Mendenhall will clear some cap space and Richardson will be a tremendous upgrade for a similar price. Richardson has all the talent and intangibles to be as good as Adrian Peterson and doesn't have any where near the injury concern. Having a running game with Richardson will make Big Ben, Antonio Brown, And Mike Wallace that much better. The Steelers gave up a lot but have drafted well recently and aren't far away from getting back to the Super Bowl. ![]() |
Analysis after the jump.

While I completely disagree with Rcoon1307 on whether or not Rashard Mendenhall isn't doing very well (over 1000 yards receiving and rushing on less then 250 touches with 9 touchdowns? How is that bad!), adding Trent Richardson will create a monster tandem (when Mendenhall returns later in the year) that is surely "old Steeler Football".
Couple that with the fact that the Steelers already have a potent passing attack? The Steelers will have one very good offense. Very good. Is it worth it to give up all those picks? I'd think not, but of course, I'm not the one in charge of the Steelers. They now have top talent all over the offense.
The fifth pick has come and gone. If you missed any of the previous picks, or want to see what trades have been made so far, check out the full schedule.

WOW
That would be interesting
waggs07 - February 15, 2012
F -, although I see the reasoning and the Steelers might do this
This is a move that potentially sinks your franchise. You gave away TONS of picks for a RB in a passing league when Big Ben is getting knocked to pieces because his line is awful and he might end up outta the league by next year with the injuries he’s getting. Just not a good situation to make this move
King Sam Rules! - February 15, 2012 via mobile
This trade only would have been good if it was for Kalil or give up less an get Reifff
King Sam Rules! - February 15, 2012 via mobile
Disagree completely...
OL help can be picked up in free agency. Without help in the running game defenses can sit back in coverage. You need to have a good running game. And the Steelers coaching staff have said they are going back to the running game. Realistically they will pick a DT in the draft ala Dontari Poe to replace Corey Hampton who is likely to be a cap casualty.
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
Outside Pouncey, the whole o-line is terrible
A decent rb can be added easy, and the other RB’s they have besides Mendenhall are ok already. 3 or 4 quality linemen are harder to get. And it’s just too many picks for a RB
King Sam Rules! - February 15, 2012 via mobile
I hear ya on the lineman troubles but injuries hurt them as well...
Having a duel threat RB who can help in the passing game will help a ton with the OL too. Richardson is a stud and I have no doubt he will be in the top 5 RB no matter where he goes. Look at your highflying attacks this year. Green Bay, New Orleans, Pitt, New England even….You have to run the ball in January to be successful.
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
The giants couldn't run the ball most the season
And Bradshaw isn’t that great of a RB, most Giants fans will tell you he’s more of a recieveing RB than a runner. You need a solid running game. Fixing the line fixes the running game. SJax being a Ram hasn’t done a damn for the qb health here, so Richardson won’t save Big Ben
King Sam Rules! - February 15, 2012 via mobile
I believe a couple years ago before Mc D-bag...
SJ 39 bailed out both Bulger and Bradford quite a bit. Also Bradshaw led the league in rushing last year and was hurt alot this year. Inhad him in fantasy football. When he plays he puts up good numbers
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
led the league in rushing?
i dont think bradshaw has ever led the league in rushing. def not last year in the regular season or post season. i went back to 2006 (dont know what year he came into the league) and he hasnt even been a top 5 guy.
jessk - February 15, 2012
2010
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
My fault he didn't lead the league...
But rushed for 1235 yards and had over 200 yards receiving
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
hate to disagree with you but...
you dont “need” a good running game. both of the superbowl teams this yr had very sub-par running games. it helps, but its not a must anymore.
unleash-the-beast#39 - February 16, 2012 via mobile
Can I atleast get an "F+" haha
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012
Your tripping dude
Rammon105 - February 15, 2012
I gave that pick an A
Rammon105 - February 15, 2012
James Farrior is 37 years old
I’d be taking Donta Hightower if I were trading up here
DCRamFan - February 15, 2012
Wow...
You would take Hightower that high?
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
wouldn't have gone that high if I were the Steelers
but I’d be addressing the RB position in FA, as well.
DCRamFan - February 15, 2012
Yeah, I wouldn't have moved up to here if I'm them
But Hightower, Reiff, Upshaw.. All names if prefer if I’m here. In the end, i would never make this move. But I credit you for making a pick with a REALLY good rationalization that I could see happening
King Sam Rules! - February 15, 2012 via mobile
Hightower is a possible second rounder lol.
They could probably get him at their current spot. I gave this an A. Richardson is not Ingram, I highly doubt he falls into the 20s.
douchiedude - February 15, 2012
I don't agree with moving up to this spot, at this cost anyways
but if I was the Steelers, I’d rather take a LB who could possibly be solid for the next decade, over a RB who may or may not produce numbers you’d expect at #5. Am I wrong in thinking that?
DCRamFan - February 15, 2012
I actually hate the steelers but that is the team that was available...
I’ve read a ton of reports though that say they will take a DT like Poe in first round. But you cant go wrong with a RB who was better than a heisman trophy winning RB on the same team at the same time lol
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
In my mind, Richardson shouldn't go top ten
He’s got top 3 talent, but at a position not worth a top ten pick anymore
King Sam Rules! - February 15, 2012 via mobile
I like Richardson
no question about it. I don’t want the Rams to draft him in the first, but it’d sure be nice to have him. I don’t think you did the Steelers wrong here……….just seems to be difficult to judge how well these college RB’s will do in the NFL these days, and you’re seeing guys in later rounds produce better numbers than those drafted early on
DCRamFan - February 15, 2012
I wouldn't do it,
but I thought it was cool seeing as it’s the Steelers grabbing the best running back since Peterson. Match made in heaven! :D But if I personally moved up there, I’m taking Claiborne. Their cornerbacks get abused.
douchiedude - February 15, 2012
Anothee better choice than Richardson
But simply, gave up waaaaaaaaaaaay too much
King Sam Rules! - February 15, 2012 via mobile
the reason the steelers are always in the hunt
is because they do not give away draft picks like this guy standing in for them. they believe in their talent evaluators enough to pick high and still get quality. as do most of the perennial winners in the league.
hbwb - February 15, 2012
This is true
King Sam Rules! - February 15, 2012 via mobile
If this is a one round mock, you win Rcoon
because you just got them an awesome RB, and then bailed on their asses for the remainder of this year…….and next
DCRamFan - February 15, 2012
+1
King Sam Rules! - February 15, 2012 via mobile
Richardson + Mendenhall +against
Joe Mazzi - February 15, 2012 via mobile
Droid, you suck
Joe Mazzi - February 15, 2012 via mobile
did your phone just called Redman 'against'?
DCRamFan - February 15, 2012
**call**
DCRamFan - February 15, 2012
Odd, no?
Joe Mazzi - February 15, 2012 via mobile
Richardson + Mendenhall + Redman
= OMFG
Joe Mazzi - February 15, 2012 via mobile
Mendenhall tore his ACL I think in the playoffs?
Out for the upcoming year :(
douchiedude - February 15, 2012
- any other young talent=
Lead league in rushing, never make playoffs
King Sam Rules! - February 15, 2012 via mobile
hahaha
Rammon105 - February 15, 2012
Mendenhall has been declining ssince his rookie season...
And seeing as how I’m only the Steelers gm until the REAL draft I would have given it all up lol
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012
with this pick
I’m almost guaranteed to get one of the players I want. Keep draft risky everyone, I need to turn the bills around.
iplaythedrums - February 15, 2012 via mobile
Personally, I love this pick
They’ll have a great offense. Richardson is a monster.
But this will NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER happen.
Eric Nagel - February 15, 2012
Hahaha....agree completely
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
if we trade down i bet any thing we end up with Richardson lol
Rammon105 - February 15, 2012
As much as I love him...
If I were the Rams I wouldnt take him over Kalil/Blackmon/Reiff/Martin/DeCastro
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
I give this a C.
As good of a player Richardson is the Steelers have more pressing needs on the O-line not to mention they need some young blood in their aging defense.
RAMpage28 - February 15, 2012
I'm with ya...
But again I think with Pouncey being healthy and them cutting some aging vets for cap room, they can add to both OL/DL in FA also
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
Worst pick EVER
Brick Top - February 15, 2012
Ouch yo.
Joe Mazzi - February 15, 2012 via mobile
The truth hurts
Brick Top - February 15, 2012
Well luckily your opinion doesn't matter much in this my friend
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
With all your gm experience....
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
You give up 5 high draft picks for a RB???
A RB???? Never should a RB be picked that high or even in the first round.
Brick Top - February 15, 2012
This would destroy the Steelers
Brick Top - February 15, 2012
Tell that to...
Adrian Peterson, Barry Sanders, Jammal Lewis, and LT. Pretty sure they were worth a top 5 pick!
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
Yeah and how many champs b/t all of em???
One, and that was due to playing on the team with one of the greatest defenses ever. RBs are never worth that high of a pick, especially in today’s NFL.
Brick Top - February 15, 2012
I promise you take away anyone of those running backs....
No of those teams (even the Ravens) wouldn’t even make the playoffs
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
But worst trade ever?
I think that goes to 1) chargers for trading up to get Leaf and 2) saints for giving away an entire draft damn near for Ricky Williams
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
At least Ricky did something
Leaf did jack.
RAMpage28 - February 15, 2012
Yeah sure...
look at the teams with the best RBs who were picked in the first round. They all suck
Brick Top - February 15, 2012
My boy 3k

Which team you got Brick Top?
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
I was the Redskins
Brick Top - February 15, 2012
Guess we are gonna have to agree to disagree my friend
Rcoon1307 - February 15, 2012 via mobile
You just gave away 5 picks including 2 first rounders for a RB?
Why oh why didn’t someone tell me Ditka was here
dbcouver - February 16, 2012
Sure did...
Rcoon1307 - February 16, 2012 via mobile
And my head just exploded.
RAMpage28 - February 16, 2012
Along with Mr Rooneys
dbcouver - February 16, 2012
I have a GIF for this but the violence of it may get me banned.
RAMpage28 - February 16, 2012
Rooney's old ass would finally kick the bucket if this happened.
RAMpage28 - February 16, 2012
THAT IS INSANITY!
RAMpage28 - February 16, 2012
I deserve an award
for pulling this off.
linus98 - February 16, 2012
And finally!!!
The demise of the steelers!!!!
Rcoon1307 - February 16, 2012 via mobile
Now I understand your motives
and I back you 100%
RAMpage28 - February 16, 2012
Finally! I was hoping someone would pick up on this!
But I do love Trent Richardson…so I killed two birds with one stone
Rcoon1307 - February 16, 2012 via mobile
Should have drafted a punter.
RAMpage28 - February 16, 2012
Nah...
I’m going to seriously overpay for Donnie Jones. Love his directional punting skills (directly to Patrick Peterson) hahaha
Rcoon1307 - February 16, 2012 via mobile
That's painful
but Peterson’s awful coverage skill takes the sting away.
RAMpage28 - February 16, 2012
Who needs to cover when you can just grab them and take a penalty?
Rcoon1307 - February 16, 2012 via mobile
I can't wait for us to have a reciever that
Just makes the cardinals secondary look stupid next year. I hate them! Except for Fitzgerald. Can’t hate on him
Rcoon1307 - February 16, 2012 via mobile
Maybe I've been watching Ram's draft for too long lol
I must have learned a thing or two
Rcoon1307 - February 16, 2012 via mobile
I Graded This Pick F
Too much was given up IMO. The Steelers could have been just as effective staying put. A lot of good RB’s in this draft. If they wanted to select RB; Doug Martin, Lamar Miller, or David Wilson would possibly still be the board. The Steelers have so many important needs to address: Secondary, OL, and LB; a trade like this may do more harm than good IMO.
ValdezY - February 16, 2012
yup
although i gave it a d. i like the pick itself, but think they gave up way too much.
itsvon - February 16, 2012
i like how a few people said they understand this pick and was backin him on it
But none ever bothered to menchin what it was they understood to make it a good pick cause I see no way in hell this was a good trade are choice for PA.
