St. Louis Rams: Draft Prospect Riley Reiff

This is a post from our newest TST author, RamHock. He'll be posting under his own header very soon, so please join us in welcoming him to the Front Page -Turf Show Times Staff

I noticed our very own RVB selected Reilly Reiff in his most recent draft at SB Nation. As with anything here at TST, opinions are certainly divided. I thought I might share a bit more about the left tackle out of Iowa, in order that you may familiarize yourselves with a player who is a very real possibility if the Redskins are the Rams trading partner. I agree with Ryan and I’m going to tell you why.

Should the Rams trade with the Redskins, for the sixth pick in the NFL Draft, there are a couple of directions the team could go. Let’s make a couple of assumptions. In this scenario, the Vikings take Kalil. They had a glaring hole at left tackle last season after losing McKinney, and I think that had a lot to do with their horrific season. I can’t imagine any other reason for a team with such talent to fail so miserably, although perhaps coaching had something to do with it. We who reside in Rams nation are intimately familiar with the shortcomings of coordinators turned head coach. Let’s also then assume that at four, the Browns take Blackmon. With a solid offensive line, and possibly a solid back if Hillis returns, they have the luxury of giving weapons to their quarterback. My final assumption is that the Bucs take Morris Claiborne at CB, as it is rare for fit, (Ronde Barber has little left in the tank) and talent to come together so nicely.

Star-divide

So, that leaves Reiff as a real possibility. Along with Kalil, and Jonathan Martin, he represents one of the three tackles presumed to go in the first round. As stated, in this scenario, Kalil will be gone. I’ll leave you folks to debate Reiff vs. Martin. I did, however, want to give just a little bit more insight into Reiff. I’d welcome someone to go more in depth about Martin. I simply haven’t watched him as much as Reiff, but I’m sure there are some Stanford fans on this board, the Rams being from LA and all.

There was an intense recruiting battle between Iowa and Nebraska for the South Dakota native Reiff. In fact, he committed to Iowa, then to Nebraska, then at the last moment back to Iowa. He was recruited as a DE, but because his feet were so quick, and his frame so amenable, he quickly moved to the other side of the line. For those who don’t know, Iowa has a history of taking quick footed kids who can gain weight and put them on the offensive line. In fact, they pride themselves in taking high school tight ends (RobertGallery, et. al.) and high school wrestlers (Matt Kroul, et. al.) and turning them into the best player they could be, rather than the best player they expect to be, with liberal help from strength coach Chris Doyle.

From the moment he stepped into the starting line up in his sophomore season, Reiff’s raw ability was obvious. The guy is a monster. He is an absolute masher. He has a Dahlesque mean streak too. It seemed to me that when he got so big, the 6’6" 300 pounder liked throwing his weight around on the football field. However, his technique improved every year.

If I may, I’d like to compare him to another Iowa lineman, Bryan Bulaga, the tackle for the Packers. He also left after his junior year, and has been a great success. What I find interesting is that Bulaga is a technician. Everything he does is picture perfect, as far as technique goes. He just stonewalls DE’s and makes them figure out how to get by him. Reiff is a mauler who has picked up technique. To me, that’s an important difference. He grabs hold and makes DE’s not want to rush him anymore, and find an easier gap to penetrate; something I feel fits into Fisher’s mold. He wants to beat you up until you take your ball and go home.

Finally, the addition of Reiff mirrors what I think many of us would like to see if Kalill were drafted, i.e. the return of Saffold to the right side. I’ve seen both live, and honestly believe Reiff fits the bill better on the left side. Having Saffold as your right tackle makes for extremely effective bookends, and a return to the position he was drafted to fill. I can’t tell you how much I hated that we drafted a Left Tackle at number two and had to move him to Right Tackle. If a guy isn’t good enough to play the position you drafted him for, with the second selection, you have busted on the pick.

Reilly Reiff could solve the same problems as Kalil. In addition, he would also offer a couple extra draft picks, something the Rams desperately need. We have to finally come to grips with just how bad this team has been. One player cannot make a difference. The difference between Kalill and Reiff, in my opinion, is not enough to hang on to the second pick with additional picks being offered and the opportunity to select him at #6.

Finally, I just wanted to thank all of you for allowing me to write for such a wonderful community. Without Rams fans, I have no forum to address my musings. I’ll try to come up with interesting things for you to read as often as possible. Comments are welcome, and likely will garner a response.

Vary Nice..

I like

So we have a new writer?

I’m not the new guy anymore??? BOOM!!!

He's going to need some help with the SBN publishing utility. I know he can count on you if he has questions
Not so much

Only as Doug allows LOL You’re still the new guy, I’m just trying to help out.

But Iowa??? EWW!!
Reiff is climbing the draft board, that's for sure.
Why isn't the "Recommend" icon showing at the bottom of the post?
I gotcha
I know why. I posted this under my name, so I can't Rec'd it.
I know you're kidding

Iowa’s reputation for linemen is approached only by Wisconsin. I’m of the impression that playing under Kirk Ferentz is as good as playing under 90% of the O-line coaches in the NFL. These guys don’t do anything but prepare for the NFL.

here is the real question,

do you, personally, take him over Martin and Adams?

Me? Over Adams - Definitely. Martin - Coin flip right now. Some are rating him higher than Kalil
***I meant that some are rating Reiff higher than Kalil***
I saw that with Mayock

He’s swapped’em back though as of last night, I think.

Feel like writing a few Draft prospect posts? Send them to me and I'll edit them for you if you want.

I’ll be out of town for a couple of days, but I’ll get to what you send me as soon as I can

Sure I'll scratch my head on it and come up with something

thanks

I would

IMO he’s more of a LT than Martin or Adams. I don’t think either Martin or Adams are gonna bust necessarily, but if put on the blind side I don’t think they’re quick enough to keep up with speedy edge rushers. Reiff will. I think he has technique and quickness on his side as a result of his coaching.

In the post's pic, Reiff looks like he has 4 foot long arms! lol
great question

I’m on record saying if the Rams trade with the Browns, Blackmon should be the pick. at 4. However, if the Redskins are the trade partner, it shoud be Reiff.

i saw the post, too...

but at 6, if the browns are to take richardson and Blackmon were still on the board, I would rather have Blackmon.

But I would still like the Reiff pick
Hey Doug..

How do you become a “writer” for TST?

It's about quality and quantity of posts here for the most part. Sometimes we find a gem like EddieP, MikeD and RamHock that have tons of experience and they have the time to commit

RamHock used to write for Rivals.com, as well as having written some really nice fanposts here

Gotcha....
I wrote a few Fanposts that people seemed to like when I first started here that kind of dovetailed into me becoming an author
Thanks for the info

I will continue to Fanpost and try to become an author. It’s fun to write about something your passionate about, that’s for sure

Keep at it! I'll do all I can to help anyone develop their writing if they need me.
You also can do it

I would suggest that you take your time with it. I mean, make sure you know the subject. You’ve got 4 months. I’ll look forward to hearing from you. Doug will make sure it’s good enough. Good luck!

to be clear

Douglas is a real life editor. He corrects writers. Never thought I needed it, but clearly I did. Feel free to send an article to any of us. I’m happy to help, however I’ll run it by doug. Perhaps my critique will get you to doug. My best advice is to sleep on anything you’ve written. Take a look with new eyes.

Doug turns my articles into

never ending red lines.

Great editor

strange to think I've been here for almost four years

weird

And welcome RamHock!
Yeah from me too Ramhock

although I know we’ve convo’d in the past, nice work here.

you're one on of those

I wanted to impress. Thank you. I’ll bring as much as I can, with help from Doug and Ryan.

but how good would he be of a writer

With no hands???…hmmmmm ask urself that

Nose-typing is tough, but it can be done... lol
who says
Hey doug,

i’m thinking of writing another post, any prospects you’d like to see covered?

We have a veritable ocean of FAs and draft prospects to cover, so have at it

The TST staff has a series coming up about Rams FAs, so that’s covered. Features about some of the new assistant coaches would be interesting too.

I am too Rando...

Here’s a couple guys I’ve been thinking of: Asante Samuel, Terrell Thomas, Brent Grimes, D. Bowe, Carl Nicks. I don’t think these guys have been written about

i'm gonna write about Carl Nicks tomorrow,

unless someone objects? lol

Go for it man
write it, send it to doug or ryan

That’s the only way I got through. Make it so good they can’t deny you.

Is it because Im Black!
7yygjuct,mkk... See! It's easy! lol
that was a raciest doug
HA! I actually tried to type with my nose. I take it back, it isn't easy! lol
You have entirely too much time on your hands (no pun intended)

Haha

i feel like u called me a gypsy
You guys have a great night. I have to travel tomorrow, so I better sign off for now. See you in a couple of days!
be safe doug

I’ll say a prayer for ya

I read somewhere that Martin isn't nasty enough for the NFL

I know you shouldn’t just go on what one person thinks but I can’t get past that comment last thing we need is another talented lineman with the wrong attitude.

Does anyone know anything more about Martin?

I don't

But he reminds me of Smith for some reason. Uber talented, without the attitude to go with it.

That's exactly my worry

Im definetly on the trade to 6th and take reiff bandwagon, I think ( hope) Washington will give up alot of picks

well done

Could there be something done on Martin just to compare?

rieff should be our right tackle

take rieff in the 1st round then we pick up jared gaither in free agency he could be our left tackle then saffold could move to left guard then draft center ben jones from georgia in the 4th round then we would have an incredible offensive line keep harvey dahl at right guard. let ben jones and jason brown battle for a starting spot since the past couple years no one has had the ability to move brown from his starting spot he hasn’t really tried to be good. he already knows he is going to make millions at the end of the year anyway!

Great Job!

Congrats! I always enjoy reading your post. You give me a lot to think about. Thiat is one of the better complements I can give: Your writing provokes thought". Well done!

Thanks for the good read

and congrats on the promotion!

I like what I'm hearing about Reiff

He sounds like a good option ‘B’ at left tackle, especially if it gets the Rams extra picks. I like that he has a mean streak; something that our last two 1st round LT’s didn’t have. If he has a passion for the game (another thing that previous two LT didn’t have) then he’ll be worth the selection and hopefully worth the cash he’ll earn. I’d still love us to get our mitts on Blackmon, but if we can’t I’d love to see Reiff in a Ram’s uni.

Thank you for the post

This was very nice. We don’t often get to read articles about O linemen and it’s such an important part of the game. I particularly enjoyed the comparisons between Reiff and Bulaga, very interesting.

glad you enjoyed it

One of the reasons Ferentz advised Bulaga to go pro was that he knew he had Reiff waiting in the wings. Here’s something I found interesting. I wrote an article about Bulaga during his freshman season, b/c he was so damn good for his age,and someone emailed me and told me that Bulaga means “Boogeyman” in Polish? Czech? One of those languages.

One last thing for the Kalil proponents...

The Rams moved up in the draft to select Pace in 1997 and he lived up to expectations, but there was still a sligthly better left tackle in that draft that could have been drafted w/o trading all the way to #1 . That was Walter Jones who had a great career with the Seahags. The Rams could have brokered a trade with the Lions to get him ahead of Seattle for less than what they gave the Jets for the 1st overall pick. The moral of that story is don’t get hung up on the draft hype of one player. Value should be the first criteria.

good point

thank you for it. Indeed, the trade off is relative value. If the Rams stay at two, Kalill is the pick. However, given additional picks, Reiff is the guy IMO, at least as far as value. The number 2 has so much value, in players available, or perhaps more importantly opportunity cost. Honestly, we’re not that far away. So, if the six gains Reiff and an extra 2nd and 3rd rounder…you’re well on your way.

Location of Stanford

Stanford is next to Palo Alto which is prime 49er country. Doubt you will find any Ram fans there.

How bout a Miami trade?

What about swapping picks with Miami and picking up Brandon Marshall? Then pick up Reiff or DeCastro at #9

Great idea... you should write a fanpost on this

If they would offer us Brandon Marshall, their second pick, and a swap of picks in the first round, I would do it in a heartbeat!

Love the article.

Well thought out, easy to read, and I love the idea of my team having a great OT!

Douglas - A very well written post

and not surprisingly, I agree with the player evaluations. Whereas I believe Blackmon has clear seperation over the other receivers in the class I am less convinced about the Kalil vs. Reiff argument. Kalil does win the propaganda campaign between the two and may turn out to be the better LT but we will see.

Regarding Reiff and Martin, I give a big advantage to Reiff. I disagree that it is Kalil by himself, then Reiff and Martin are close then everyone else. I do feel that Kalil and Reiff are rather close, Adams and Martin are rather close a notch below then everyone else. I did watch plenty of Stanford games this year and IMO the eye candy on the O-Line for the Cardinal was consistently David DeCastro. I would DD as a Ram but would balk at Martin.

Finally, it seems to me dating well back to the Hayden Fry days that kids coming out of Iowa seem to have a work ethic second to none. I have always been a Purdue fan in that conference so I have no particular love for Hawkeye’s but I do admire the effort their teams put forth on Saturday’s. If the Rams draft Reiff and McNutt I would give it a thumbs up.

Once again, great job!

Reiff and RamHock

I take umbrage with one comment, RamHock, that the LA/Anaheim Ram fans are Stanford fans. The 49ers’ fans are probably Stanford fans and the LA/Anaheim Ram fans USC or possibly UCLA fans.

Other than that, great post and I think that Reiff would be a solid choice if they traded down although I’d take Richardson if Blackmon was off the board with this pick. I watched Martin against USC and wasn’t too impressed with him so I’d take Reiff over Martin if LT was the choice.

one of my downfalls

Is that I don’t know much about California and it’s geography (it’s somewhere between Alaska and Hawaii right?) which I’ll have to get better at. I know there are a lot of California Rams fans. I’ll get better I promise. Thanks for the kind words.

Good Work Ram Hock!

A solid first article, the proof is that I read all of it. Talking about lineman is a great way to get me interested though, especially LT. I’ve been behind getting a solid LT as our #1 pick since last years draft, so I like to have info on all the options. I love Kalil, but extra draft spots are extremely valuable right now so I can certainly see the upside of trading down and pickup up this guy or Martin. Keep up the writing!

Thank you

for the kind words, and the support. I love writing for people that appreciate it. Keep reading, I have much more to come!
