Reggie Wayne is probably one of the most recognizable names in free agency, but hasn’t been mentioned much here at Turf Show Times. Besides being a pass catcher for the seeming guided missiles of Peyton Manning for the past decade plus, Reggie Wayne has been the measure of consistency for the Indianapolis Colts.
The 33 year old New Orleans Louisiana native is 6’ 0" and 198 lbs of pigskin snagging flesh and bone. Reggie Wayne is not the biggest receiver you will ever see, but he runs good routes and has those ever desired soft hands. (Insert joke of choice here.) So what has he done besides be the envy of every undersized receiver in the league?
During his 11 years in the league he has:
173 games played (If you are playing at home that is only 3 games missed due to injury) 862 receptions, 11, 708 yards, a 13.6 yard per catch average, 67.7 yards per game caught, 73 touchdowns, 156 catches of 20 or more yards, 30 catches of 40 or more yards, 618 catches that resulted in a 1st down, and only 8 fumbles. Like I said before, he is the measure of consistency. Even in a year where the Colts had two of the worst quarterbacks under center, Reggie Wayne had 76 catches for 960 yards.
As much as the Colts organization would love to have him back next year, he most likely will end up somewhere else before draft day. Why St. Louis? There is much chatter of Blackmon being the Rams number one pick, and if that is the case, why not bring in one of the most experienced and technically sound wide receivers in the NFL to mentor and counsel him? Even if the Rams go another direction in the draft, Sam Bradford needs a go to receiver opposite the hopefully re-signed Brandon Lloyd.
At the age of 33, Wayne will not command as much in the way of salary as Vincent Jackson. Granted Jackson has more upside by being 3 years younger, but this team’s rebuilding is not all about youth movement, as free agents like Tulloch, Finnegan, and others are names being bounced around at Rams headquarters.

Hmmmm......
Add Reggie Wayne and draft a Blackmon or a guy like Floyd or Sanu that he can mentor. That would be the smart thing. The WR’s would be outstanding then and be a strength on the team. Ryan Broyles would also be a great pickup later in the draft around the 5th round and start off as the PR or KR

Very good point made here.

Hell they got rid of Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt at that age
why pick up Wayne.
chndlr54 - February 24, 2012

I would love this pick up more than any so far.
A veteran like Wayne would benefit the existing young receivers we choose to keep, any new receiver we draft, AND teach Bradford a few tricks as well.
David5264 - February 11, 2012
Grab Dallas Clark as well to train Kendricks and Uh Oh.
David5264 - February 11, 2012
I'd prefer this over Wayne

Enjoyed the read.
I know teams are looking for a #1 WR to be 6-3 or 6-4 or so but a 6-0 WR is not undersized. I never once considered Holt or Bruce undersized and there are a pretty good receivers around the league who are 6-0 & 6-1. Anyways, I would love to have Wayne join the Rams.

Their ability to run routes and gain separation
made it so their height didn’t matter. Size in a WR is usually overrated, if you can run routes and get separation it doesn’t matter.

I would like Reggie Wayne
but he could cost to much and be to old.

but he would cost to much and be to old
Ramfan4life - February 11, 2012
Too old
I’d rather sign one of the younger FA WRs
Brick Top - February 11, 2012
The one thing that comes to mind is what happened when Lloyd was signed...
… Not only did he actually catch passes, he seemed to effect all of our WRs. His example had guys like Gibson and DX laying out for passes. Salas seemed to turn a corner when Lloyd arrived?
If we lose Lloyd, finding another experienced WR to the team might be a good idea…

Stevie Johnson is my favorite
Josh Wehrle - February 11, 2012
DeSean Jackson FTW
Brick Top - February 11, 2012
I like Stevie too
but someone said last night that he’s looking for something like $7mil. If that’s true, then let his crazy ass go elsewhere
DCRamFan - February 11, 2012
7 seems legit for stevie
he put up bowe numbers but bowe will cost ten

Prefer
Personally IMO I would prefer Wayne over Jackson. The reason being is that I believe he would fill in so to say the mentor role a lot better as well as his skill set. Take those in the equation and you have one hell of a reciever, as said in a previous post not only can he teach our recievers a thing or two BUT he can also help out Bradford since he did work with one of is not the best QB in the business.
BurnoutJoeB. - February 11, 2012
Typo
IF not IS
“work with one of IF not the best QB”
BurnoutJoeB. - February 11, 2012
he is too old, and i wouldnt want two old recievers, hes not even a deep threat. I think lloyd has enuf experience to help blackmon if we were to get him
Cmoney243 - February 11, 2012
You mean "them".
We have a better chance of getting Blackmon than Lloyd.
Boofer - February 11, 2012
If we go 6-6 we'll wish we had him for the home stretch and playoff push....
If he’s cheap, sure. I just don’t want to get only him and call it good. So I voted other needs or another WR. I would definitely be open to pick him up, though. We have other needs and we could use another WR, too.
dbcouver - February 11, 2012
2nd pick Kalil
+lloyd and Wayne= Bradford sucsses
randyvannram - February 11, 2012
If we lose Lloyd
I’d rather have DJax on one side and blackmon on the other, wishful thinking on my part..
RG31 - February 11, 2012
Logical.
money ain’t right tho
Ram_Redemption - February 11, 2012 via mobile
Yea all depends on his asking price
I say 4-5 mil a year..
RG31 - February 11, 2012 via mobile
I think he would be a great teacher and mentor to our young recievers....
For the right price.

Can't see it
I don’t see a scenario where we resign Lloyd and get Reggie, we have to many other holes to fill.
Only way I would want Reggie is if we ended up drafting Blackmon, and then it would be a 1-2 year contract, which I don’t think he’d agree to unless were about to start the season and he hasn’t signed anywhere.
Also from Rotoworld:
“Wayne has had a nice, long career, but we get the feeling that he severely overvalues himself after a season in which he didn’t always play hard and it showed up on tape. The Colts will not want him back.”
Scato - February 11, 2012
I am positive that this is going to get some negative responses
but the whole ‘mentor/teacher for our younger players’ thing doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.
I hear some people say that they don’t want VJAX because he’s 29. It’s just odd to me that being young and inexperienced is something sought after, which I understand, but then when your late 20’s, early 30’s your in this purgatory of being ‘almost’ too old to take chance on……..yet some want Reggie Wayne. Look, I think Reggie is great. Great career, classy guy. He’s not at the top of my FA WR list, though
If the Rams wanted a mentor/teacher for their, hopefully young WR’s (IMO), then they would’ve hired Henry Ellard….
DCRamFan - February 11, 2012
I agree DC.
Talk about money? He wrote not commanding like V.Jax , but I’m sure it’s a good number. Resign Lloyd, draft Blackmon,& see how much money you got afterwards. Maybe D.Jax??
