The New England Patriots have hired Josh McDaniels following his one-year, ill-fated stint as the St. Louis Rams' offensive coordinator. Adam Schefter reported the news on Saturday, one day after the Patriots asked for and received permission to speak with McDaniels, who was still under contract with the Rams.
McDaniels will join the Patriots immediately, helping out during their playoff run. In 2012, he will become their offensive coordinator, replacing Bill O'Brien who is off to breath new life into the Penn State football program. The biggest surprise here is that McDaniels did not move across the state to join Scott Pioli and the Chiefs as their offensive coordinator. Of course, all that talk started before the Patriots had a vacancy. What better way to boost your coaching stock than oversee an offense centered around Tom Brady.
It's worth noting, again, in all of this coaching talk just how good an elite quarterback makes his coaches look. Just ask Mike Shanahan.
As far as requiem for McDaniels' tenure in St. Louis, there really isn't much to say. In hindsight, it's easy to see why it was such a grand failure. Dysfunction has followed McDaniels once he was no longer Belichick's apparatchik. The Rams brought him into a place where dysfunction was the rule, where the head coach was uncomfortable with him.
By the way, let that be a lesson to anyone thinking Mike Martz would be a good fit to return to St. Louis. Dumping Spagnuolo and Devaney was as much about purging (purges, apparatchiks, someone's putting that masters thesis in Soviet history to good use, finally) dysfunction, the kind of dysfunction that contributed to a 10-38 record.
Best of luck to McDaniels. In a way, it's unfortunate that he never worked out here. It really was intended to enliven the dink and dunk offense. The best intentions of mice and men and all that ...

Brady to Lloyd. Might be the start of something legendary.
addnon - January 7, 2012
Let them have him
Will suck if Lloyd follows him, but I am willing to lose Lloyd instead of having Mac around for another year
ChrisL951 - January 7, 2012
Good point. I never really liked him (McD)
addnon - January 7, 2012
do we get a comp pick for this?
DevsLaRams - January 7, 2012
Nope nothing
Thats according to a patriots website

Tom Brady
Will make him look good (somehow) for a couple years, leading to another shot at a HC gig. He will again be exposed as the nincompoop we all knew he was…nincompoop..hahaha
howie43 - January 7, 2012
We play the Patriots next season at home too...I can't wait!
addnon - January 7, 2012
I don't see Lloyd doing all that well in N.E. if he decides to chase McD there.
Lloyd would be a 4th or 5th target at best based on N.E.‘s offense. If the Rams make a fair offer, he should stay here. He’ll get #1 WR targets with the Rams, and outside of Jacksonville, I don’t see him getting better work
Douglas M - January 7, 2012
I agree
ChrisL951 - January 7, 2012
Why is everyone linking Lloyd leaving with McD?
They’re not tied together, he played what 2 full seasons with McD that’s it; not 7 or 12
sergey606 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Because of this
ChrisL951 - January 7, 2012
That did not work right

ChrisL951 - January 7, 2012
would attempt to follow
doesn’t mean he will
sergey606 - January 7, 2012
Well yeah that's up to the Pats if they wanna sign him
I hope they decide not to sign him, so we can resign him
ChrisL951 - January 7, 2012
The pats will want to sign him
They where one of the teams who where interested in trading for him before the deadline this year, the rams ended up getting him. But if he follows mcd the pats will bring him in with open arms.

As the old song goes..."don't let the screen door hit you on your way out."
IF Lloyd follows McD, it will be a mistake IMHO. Tom Brady ain’t gettin’ any younger. It won’t be as dramatic as Indy’s decline without Peyton Manning, but the Pats will be a different team without Brady. They’ll probably be contenders as long as Bellichick stays, but maybe more in the 9-7, 10-6 range instead of 13-3 or 14-2. Even though the Jets imploded this year, the Dolphins and Bills are improving in that division.
Meanwhile, minus Devaney/Spags, their coaching cronies, and some baaad players like Smith, Brown, King, Robbins, Gibson, etc., plus the fact we’ll get some new high draft picks, things will be a bit fresher in STL. Lloyd could be a #1 or 2 WR on an improving upstart team.
JHaier - January 7, 2012
I would definitely rather play for the Patriots offense lol
loyal2therams - January 7, 2012
Did we get any compensation for letting McD out of his contract? Draft pick? Gift certificate to the "Hungry Heffer"? Porn? lol
Douglas M - January 7, 2012
No nothing
Not even a used playboy. It took me ages to find anything but i eventually found a patriots website wondering why we didnt even ask for anything!!!
Peter Vevers - January 7, 2012
Because we didn't care about him leaving lol
ChrisL951 - January 7, 2012
Blackmon is souding good right now..
RG31 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Lloyd and Blackmon, sounds better. Franchise Lloyd if possible
RenoRammin - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Can we franchise Lloyd?
Just wondering…….
Pekka for Predator Pontiff - January 7, 2012
Not sure if we can
But if he wants to follow Mac and we franchise him he may sit out or be whinny all year, don’t need that I would rather just sign him if he decides to stay here
ChrisL951 - January 7, 2012
is this what Kroenke wants to do
Have a pissing battle with a nothing coordinator when he is trying to show what a great boss he would be when trying to woo Fisher here?
albinoninja - January 7, 2012
the quick answer is no
albinoninja - January 7, 2012
After spending all season screwing up the Rams, that idiot is going to coach the turncoats in the playoffs.
I hope they get shut out and brady spends all the day eating turf. I don’t mean Giselle’s either.
