Where Things Stand With Jeff Fisher And The Rams

St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke wrapped up his interview with Jeff Fisher on Thursday in Denver. Even before the two finished, the rumor mill said that Fisher would be choosing between the head coaching jobs in St. Louis or with the Miami Dolphins. On Friday, Adam Schefter confirmed that. Let's take a look at what we know about the situation.

A complete Jeff Fisher update after the jump.

Star-divide

What Does Fisher Prefer?

As for which team will land the biggest fish in the coaching sea right now, it's anyone's guess. Some seem to think that it will be the Rams, including Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network. Others say he's truly undecided.

One thing to keep in mind is that Miami, through a not so subtle media strategy, made it clear that no team would beat their offer in terms of salary. That's significant because Fisher was poised to make $6.5 million had he coached the Titans in 2011. He got an $8 million buyout instead.

But there's more than money factoring into Fisher's decision, as Mike Freeman at CBS reported. What else is there besides money? Freeman also cited sources who said that Kroenke and the Rams pushed hard on the fact that they have a franchise quarterback in place with Sam Bradford. They may have needed to do a hard sell on that point because Mike Silver of Yahoo reported that Fisher was hardly starstruck by Bradford.

Some have said that the Rams have an advantage because of a clean slate as far as organizational structure goes. Fisher, if he's hired relatively soon, would get some say in picking the new GM. You can imagine that Stan Kroenke also tried to sell him on his desire to win. The Rams also have a very nice cap situation in 2013, with roughly $40 million in room, and the second pick in the draft this year that might be a desired commodity for fetching more picks.

Just How Much Will Fisher Cost?

You can bet that Fisher will be one of the highest paid coaches in the league this year. As mentioned above, he was going to make $6.5 million in Tennessee. Bill Belichick, the highest paid coach in the league, makes $7.5 million a season. Mike Shanahan makes $7 million a year.

The Rams had to pay Steve Spagnuolo's remaining year of salary to get him to go away, which was between $2 and $3 million. They also had to buyout Devaney's final contract year.

Coaching changes aren't cheap.

When Will We Know?

Probably not until next week, early next week.

The Rams have yet to comply with the Rooney Rule. They can't hire Fisher, or any other coach, until they get in line with that. And that should happen over the weekend when they are expected to interview Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton.

Just have Kroenke calll up R.Morris and interview him over the phone lol that takes care of the Rooney rule hahaha
The reports by Mike Silver

may be a little disconcerting. Is Sam truly a franchise QB? I have my doubts and perhaps JF and others around the league have theirs as well. If a highly coveted coach like JF are debating between a team like the Dolphins and Rams there is a high probablility that their future is directly linked to the success of Sam. Whereas, nobody can question Sam’s arm and accuracy, I have to think there are questions about his defensive reads, decision-making and his pivot ability to avoid the rush. With so many offensive linemen going down with injuries it seems as though there is constant pressure on QB’s in todays NFL. Accordingly, it appears as though NFL evaluators are placing a greater value on mobile QB’s that have strong arms rather the prototypical drop back QB’s like Sam. Clearly the year Cam Newton had has brought additional focus to these physical attributes. Clearly everyone here wants to jump all over the Rams O-Line for the incessant pressure on Sam and the number of sacks he took over the course of the games he played. But I have to think many of those sacks would not have occured if Sam were more elusive in the pocket.
I have to think if JF does choose Miami over the Rams he is making a pretty big statement that he doesn’t think Sam is the NFL QB that many in here feel that he is. As noted in Van’s article, the bounty we can attract from the 2nd pick in the draft + our cap relief in 2013 are huge reasons why an HC like JF would want to come to St. Louis.

Kroenke still believes in Bradford, hes not going anywhere

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/columns/bernie-miklasz/bernie-bytes-kroenke-believes-in-bradford/article_d9bdac3a-3627-11e1-baa4-001a4bcf6878.html

Silver

Is an arrogant a-hole and hates anything that used to be southern California. He usually reports on items with little support. When was the last time Silver broke a lead or a story?

Just another pundit.

Dude he talked to him...
Are You Seriuos?

It’s His Second Year! With The Worst Coach And OC The Rams Have Had! Think Before You Post!

Bradford

Is he going to be a legit QB in the NFL? I think so. His arm strength is good, his accuracy is overrated in my opinion but that may be because he is so nervous in the pocket. I think that he has some mobility. Shurmur used to have designed rollouts in his offense and Sam moved pretty well. Also, remember in 2010 when Sam threw a pick and chased a safety all the way down the field and finally caught up to him? I think that Sam is intelligent and tough but I agree that his defensive reads need improvement. A better O-line, healthy receivers, an offseason with OTA’s and a new QB coach are needed. An upgrade over SJax at RB would help Sam as well.
If Luck fell to #2, I think that it would be a no-brainer to trade Sam and draft Luck though. Luck looked pretty damn good in the Fiesta Bowl with touch and accuracy, good footspeed and he even rolled out to the left.

Can we please stop this trading Bradford nonsense? It's not happening!

Kroenke told the press he is behind Bradford. Enough said.

An upgrade over S-Jax?

Who are you hoping to get? I realize he is not what he was at 24/25 but the guy is the best offensive player on the team and still a top back. Is Ray Rice or Arian Foster coming; unless someone like that who we have zero chance at getting is coming we are not getting an upgrade. Jackson is the furthest thing from the problem on the offense; not to mention Bradford definitely has a share of the blame. I expect Bradford to pick up his play next year and hopefully raise the level of the players around him, I think we can all agree on that premise.

There are other reports out there that Fisher loves Bradford

So take it all as a grain of salt until Fisher actually signs a contract

RG31 - I know you Sooner

Homer and that is fine. Hopefully ChrisL is right. At this stage I care more about what JF thinks about Bradford than I do what Kroenke think about Sam. Personally I like Sam but I just worry about his ability to sidestep the rush. Ankles are the most underrated part of the QB anatomy IMO.

I care more about what Kroenke thinks

He’s the one that signs the paychecks, if he says Sam is staying then I believe it then again I would also like it if he went to a different team but that’s just me and being a big fan..

Basically, we don't give a crap where he plays

As long as he is given talent

Hmmm - I gotta disagree

with you on that one RG. Signing paychecks doesn’t get it done when it comes to W’s!

Hes the owner

Getting rid of bradford would put a big hole in the cap, he will be a ram next season, but like KSR said as long as he is on a team with talent I don’t care.

+1 KSR! Now is the time in

this draft to gain some of that much needed talent.

I don't know how good Bradford will be,

but Fisher or whoever will have the team better get used to having Sam for at least 2 years. Hopefully he’s as good as everyone hopes he will be.

but the Dolphins are more of an unknown at QB than the Rams and that gives the Rams an advantage
I think RTP

is probably right about the quarterback position having to evolve and be somewhat elusive, but Sam isn’t really a statue back there. If you queue up a Sam Bradford highlight reel at Oklahoma, one will notice “wow, he sure seems to roll out a lot.” I’d like to see how successful Bradford was last season when rolling out, because it seems like he was pretty good at it.

Anyway, just my two cents.

were they designed roll outs?

My biggest complaint about him is his lack of pocket presence, his lack of using his athletic ability and try to scramble or move around in the pocket, and him locking onto wide receivers.

what i saw early in the season

(and really that is the most telling time because sam was healthy) was the defenses knew the rams did not have receivers with speed to get open quickly so threw overload blitzes at him constantly. with guys coming from all angles very few qb’s could have used fancy footwork to avoid the rush.

no sam is plenty mobile enough when healthy and is accurate throwing on the run. he may be more accurate on the move than as a pocket passer from what i have seen.

All I am saying is when the

pocket collapses (which is often in the NFL on pretty much every team) how good is Sam at pivoting, evading and hitting receivers when he is under duress. No, I am not expecting Tebow like evasiveness out of Sam but we will never see how could Sam can be if he can’t evade rushes better.
I agree T.Ram. That is my rub as well. I think the jury is still out on Sam in those areas. In his defense, losing Danny didn’t help.

I think it's sad..

that some of the most vocal bloggers on TST are fans of the Rams only because of Sam Bradford. They are willing to follow Bradford to whatever team and seemingly become new fans of that team. Now me, being a Ram fan for nearly forty years finds this sad. I’m sure Sam is going to stay and maybe with the extra time following the Rams with Sam, you may stay a fan after he leaves.

Haha

If you’re talking about me, I’ve already said even if he did leave the rams I would stay a fan of the rams but I would still watch him wherever he went, so….

I’m a Rams fan because they drafted Sam, since my dad raised me a Sooner fan(even in North Carolina, you should try explaining that one its fun to see the looks on their faces) but the Rams have become my team and there are many players on the Rams I like and even if Sam wasn’t a Ram anymore…I would still like the Rams, of course I would like whatever team Sam goes to as well.

Personally think the Rams are in a great position, if they can trade the 2nd pick for draft picks it works for the best of both worlds for the Rams….. First is they can get the weapons they need, 2nd if Sam doesn’t work out(but I think he will) then you’ve built many of the other pieces of your team you need and maybe even still have a few extra draft picks to use as trade to get whoever you think is your QB of the future in the next couple years. Win win for the Rams in my opinion if the FO can pull off a good trade.

Christy(yes for most of you who have not seen any of my other posts, I am a girl and NO nothing you guys say and post on here offends me. My brother owns sports collectibles and hobby stores, I hear and see much worse all the time….I’m used to it)

Nice to have you aboard.
And by that he means.......

I’m not finishing that sentence.

shhhhhhhhh

She doesn’t know the real me

I didn't mention any names

But time will tell

I think the simple truth is

Sam went from being the rookie of the year to one of the worst in the NFL. The dude still has ton of potential but he needs atleast a decent line and some good weapons. With the word that McDaniels may be leaving which mean Lloyd most likely will to, that only leaves sjax as an above average weapon. He needs help along with a qb coach.
This next season will from the tell for bradford, I think he will come out in top given the above help, he can’t do it by himself. If he does all this talk will end, if he still isn’t good well that’s up to stan.

All that is true

The only lie you told is he won offensive rookie of the year :) agree with everything else though

How did he not win it? lol
lol I guess because of the last 3 games

I’m sure if we would have gotten into the playoffs he would have gotten the award. Suh won it over him. :/

Last time I checked ROY is split into OROY and DROY

There is no overall ROY.

Haha thats why I said offensive rookie of the year

Suh did win rookie of the year and defensive rookie of the year though.

But there is no ROY award. Only OROY and DROY.

?

Now I see it,

Pepsi does the rookie of the year award, but they also do the NFL rookie, air, ground, and etc awards.

At T.Ram

You said that sam didn’t win OROY (which he did) then said

I’m sure if we would have gotten into the playoffs he would have gotten the award. SUH won it over him. :/
How in the holy fuck does a defensive player win offensive rookie of the year?

See the post above.

Honestly it doesn’t matter, let’s hope Sam shows out next year. Anyway I’m done talking about Sam, theres actually a female on this site. :o

.... A female?

What?

A few comments up.
Calm yourself T. Calm yourself
RE: Female Here is the wiki link.

Hope this helps.
Do we have to teach you nubes EVERYTHING! Jesh
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female

Thanks but no thanks.

I know what a woman is.

Haha I was surprised as well..
.... Bull Shit.
There is no way any woman any where

is on this site.

ha, my hometown is built around NASCAR. I’ve survived that garage and industry for years….after that one just learns to pass right over information they don’t care to partake in.

Like I said, please don’t change anything you post, it won’t offend. I will just skip right over and read something that I care to converse about.

Christy

Alright then prepare to skip over my comments BIG TIME.
Great to have you on board
Who is the weather girl on KSDK.?

I think i am in love..

Yes commented a week or so ago

Also a Sam supporter..

Since you were a big Sam supporter

that must give you wood. But now you want him shipped out to Miami. So you must be very sexually confused.

xD

This made me laugh, but no I’ve stated I want him to stay a ram but I wanted to entertain it since everyone else does.

Everybody needs to laugh

especially us. People cheering for a 2-14 team that needs one of everything and has a stadium with red seats despite the fact that the team doesn’t use the color red at all.

Yea if Ram fan cant laugh at themselves, wed be dead...
Bang

falling on floor.

no one else did brutha...

you were the only one lol!

that makes no sense and you linking it to sexuality either

mean’s your frustrated cause you don’t get any or you don’t get any

....

What? Why did you repeat the end of that sentence or Why did you repeat the end of that sentence

Also there is this magical thing called comedy

which I just used. As in it was a joke. As in it was meant to be funny. As in… forget it.

Suh was way better

he was pro bowl quality while Sam wasn’t close

+1...

Like I said in another thread, I’m hoping for some real nastiness on this team from either the Draft or Free Agency. No more “Four Pillars”, let’s just get some guys in this team who’ll kick ass. Suh would have given us that. But we don’t have him, so we’re set in our franchise QB. Let’s get some real bad-asses around Sam and the D.

reggie mckenzie

to raiders as gm :(

What about the new structure?

Kroenke says his personnel guy will make the decisions on the players, so that would mean that the owner will not force him to do anything. Hiring a guy and telling him you want him to have control over what players are on the roster and then forcing him to keep a quarterback is foolish.

Hiring a guy and telling him you want him to have control over what players are on the roster and then forcing him to keep a quarterback is foolish.

Which is what happened to Fisher in Tennessee. How fun.

well IF they get fisher and he's not satisfied with bradford and decides to trade him

then its a win, win. The Ram’s will get additional picks for Bradford and Bradford will get to soar to the top with a talented team. I am a sooner fan and I know what Bradford is capable of. Now having said that if Fisher is smart he’ll surround Bradford with weapon’s and use the 2012 season as an evaluation of Bradford cause frankly there is only one quarterback that even looks remotely like a possible franchise quarterback and that’s RG 3 in my opinion.

So Andrew Luck doesn't even have a remote chance of being a possible franchise QB?

But analysts and the ESPN says he’s the next John Elway, Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, Jesus Machine.

I know there is a lot of hype on him but I think he has a pretty good chance of being a franchise QB.
The hype surrounding Luck is second only to Tim Tebow and I saw nothing that

impress’s me he played cup cake schools and the 2 times he didn’t his team got beat and he didn’t do anything that a typical nfl quarterback wouldn’t and I’m not talking about the franchise quarterback in the NFL either. Rg 3 on the other hand did plenty including that frustratingly beautiful pass he threw at the last second literly during the O.U. v. Baylor game.

Dam there really areeee alot of sooner fans here lol
Damn and here I thought I was unique...
GO LONGHORNS!
Also Oklahoma State is the best College Football team In Oklahoma.
To both of those statements I have the same reactions

BOOMERS SOONER!

59–42–5

Longhorns record versus the Sooners. Nuff said.

Yelp but whos won more recently?

And who’s won more Bug 12 championships recently? Nuff said!

Who cares about eh Big 12 anymore??

It will be gone soon.

Its just the Big 8 with friends

And Nebraska ruled it.

big*
hmm its been O.U. mostly recently including 2010
Hmm thats, thats what I though...
poor pathetic looser horns just have the rivalry and that's just barely

as far as I’m concerned

We damn near win the conference every year

There is not rivalry as far as I’m concerned..

You do Realize I'm doing all of this to fuck with you Sooner fans right?
Haha yelp
see your a long thorns fan but that's ok everyone makes mistakes

BOOO HORNS

No there not they just fucking lucky won't happen next season
Lol people bout to kill eachother

Over colleges they dnt attend lol god bless college football

You Luck bashers out there may

want to consider that Luck lost his #1 receiver to a TJ McDonald head explosion this year. Seems like the 2nd half of the season he pretty much was throwing to TE’s.

And he checks down often

But no matter who he throws to they are always wide open anyway.

so it doesn't negate the fact he was playing against cup cake schools and the

two times he didn’t they lost.

it's the rams to lose-----they need to step up to the plate big time

thats what scares me

Wat is?
i'm not sure at this point bradford is a franchise qb

he still needs to prove it to us fans

as he’s beaten only one winning team in 2 years

and hasn’t really had a good game since 2010 2nd 49ers game

God things seemed so positive then

and the future was ours

Ummm Freewheeler - Not sure

you can call USC a cupcake school. Luck beat them on the road and rallied them late with his #1 receiver in the dark room. Notre Dame was favored against SC and was never quite the same after USC mahandled them.

And you know as well as I

that he had OSU beat. Either of us could have kicked that first FG to win the game. The Ducks game was the one that he didn’t look too great in. Their speed always gives Stanford fits on both side of the ball.

Soooooo......

If the Rams don’t wind up reeling in Fisher (ha..), I’m not going to lose any sleep over it.

Gone Fishing.

(and by that I mean that I’m going to look constantly hung over)

and it was the Egg McMuffin of hangovers.
Rams....

Interesting that the decision to choose which teams rests on whether Bradford is a Franchise QB or not. That didn’t stop Jim Harbaugh from choosing to coach the 49ers, did it? Look what the 49ers have done this year.
Great coaches can coach anywhere! As long as the owner and the front office are on the same page. PERIOD!

PS

What’s it say about Jeff Fisher if he chooses the Dolphins over the Rams because he isn’t sold on Bradford? What’s it say about Harbaugh that he chose the 49ers whether he liked Smith or not?

if it is all about the sunshine and money...

for jeff fisher…than we dont need you man. i would laugh my ass off if he did indeed go to miami (hoping NOT!) and they wanted to trade up to the #2 spot, and the rams gave him the finger!! lmao!

Josh mcdaniels let go
I loved the Oregon Helmets

Could the Rams do that with the horns?

After Kerry Collins and Vince Young

I could hardly see why Jeff Fisher is complaining…

McNair was a boss, though.
I can see why he might want another one.
TST Infighting

If the rams draft Justin Blackmon will OSU fans become rams fan? Will we have constant bickering btwn OSU and OU fans? Will more women start commenting? Will Sam Bradford Tebow? Will Tebow Bradford? Will I stop writing this stupid post? Yes.

You definitely Tebowed that post.

But on the Tebow hand, it was really entertaining to Tebow. In the future you might want to consider Tebowing the living Tebow out of it. Fo Tebow, mang.

Kudos

for using Tebow as a noun, verb, adjective, gerund and Tebow.

That was Tebowlicious!!!
PRAISE TEBOW!
I must send a check.

Screw feeding the children.

Tebow will take care of those children anyway.

As god I’m just too busy.

Its almost like a transitive Tebow.
a dangling Tebow bronco
It's got...

Tebosity

I dont get why the weather in Miami should matter?

Your a millionaire buy a summer home there! Your supposed to be focused on coaching. And if thats what matters then he does not belong here!

Heard the Arizona DC impressed today..

Where did you hear that?

Was it Tebow?

Jim Thomas.
Lmao idk y but I laughed so hard at this
Breaking news in St Louis

It’s a done deal Jeff Fisher is the rams next head coach.

According too?
Done deal?

You are apparently good at reading between the lines but doesn’t sound like it’s a done deal at all

On the latest info

According Howard Balazar the lead columnist on 101 ESPN.

"Fisher expected to be Rams Coach" - Howard Balzer

http://www.101sports.com/?sid=15727941&nid=99

He seems pretty sure of Fisher? Interesting
Good

I wasn’t that high on Fisher but this team needs some legitamacy. Fisher will bring that as he will have players that perform or they won’t be Rams.

Fisher coming to this team may attract some FA's
Love him or hate him

Titans CB Cortland Finnegan is now a FA

Finnegan is a good player.

Period.

End of discussion.
Yuuuuupp!!!
can we afford him?
Presently - no

Without Jason Brown, Jason Smith and James Butler – yes

They are all pretty much gone.
Fisher - The Jeff Foxworthy Days

STOP!

I’m trying to gain my respect for Fisher!

If YOU thing Jason Smith is worth all that money...

you might be a dumshit.

lol i actually snorted reading this
YOU KNOW YOU"RE A RAM WHEN:

You drop a lateral and just stand there and watch a defender return it for a TD.

Here's your sign

Uh oh, wrong guy.

Gonna be a good day, Tater.
Blue Collar Rams Tour
Git 'er done
You know, my sister was a Ram

She’s a big ole girl. Has a mole right here. And the walkin farts.

Barron is gone
But he was a handsome fella

that's sick, i don' care who yar

Sadly there was very little comedy to be found
Was there a winner for the Fisher caption contest?
Or the Kellen Clemens caption entry?
(Careful, we'll scare him away)
I just simmed the whole 2011 season on Madden to start from this point.

Step 1 – fire Spags, hire Fisher
Step 2 – roster overhaul (Brown, Smith, Butler, Bell, etc)
Step 2.5 – franchise tag Lloyd, trade for 1st rounder
Step 3 – cheatingly acquire more draft picks
Step 4 – draft #1 WR & franchise LT
Step 5 – Super Bowl

Step 6

Fire Justin King. Hire him back and fire him again. (I learnt that from Spags.)

Where the Tebow did everybody go???

Did he call ya home?

I'm going to say my 3 HAIL Tebows and go to bed.
FACT

Tebow is the messiah.

He threw a pass to a leper.

Fortunately, missed him by a mile cause it would have knocked his arm off.

Hahahahaha
FACT

Roethlisberger is Judas

But gets more tail
Forcefully
Anybody heard of Ryan Grigson

He is the Eagles Director of Player Personnel and apparently the Rams have asked permission from the Eagles to interview him.

Never heard of him. JAT (just ask Tebow)

Comment on the article from a fan.
If he was the guy advising on most of these bust college draft players PLEASE take him and take him NOW before the next draft.
Grigson also (according to the report)

spent four years with the Rams as an area and national scout before joining the Eagles. He has a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Rams’ scouting staff in 1999.

According to the article not report.
Sounds yawn-worthy - I want the dude from Baltimore

The Eagles have granted director of player personnel Ryan Grigson permission to interview for the Colts and Rams general manager openings, according to an NFL source.

After four seasons as director of college scouting, Grigson was promoted into his current position in early 2010, replacing now-general manager Howie Roseman. Grigson, 39, has been with the Eagles since 2003 when he first joined the staff as a scout.

A product of Purdue, Grigson was drafted by the Bengals in the sixth round of the 1995 draft. The offensive lineman spent that season with the Detroit Lions, however. He played another season in the Canadian Football League and then retired.

The "dude" from Baltimore isn't on the market anymore.
He's on the market all right

Just needs the right opportunity and price.

We gotta take him up in the arch and not let him down til he signs.

That would work.
He's not leaving Baltimore.

That’s not really up for debate any longer. He has declined all interview requests.

I was afraid of that.

There’s no cap on staff – Stan gotta go to the hip.

for those about to rock

i salute you

i'd go with a college---but fischer will be named hc by monday -for the rams
