Fans around here know the drill. With another disappointing St. Louis Rams season in the books, the head coach and GM seach isn't the only thing on our minds lately. The 2012 NFL Draft is four months away, which means we're right in the home stretch for the die hard draftniks. A couple of interesting reports out today that are worth mentioning.
South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffery declared for the draft today, making it official. There aren't many prospects that evoke as much debate as Jeffery. After a big season in 2010, his 2011 season was mediocre, 49 catches, 762 yards and eight touchdowns.
Jeffery has high ceiling, and some argue that he's among the best receivers in this year's draft class, ahead of Justin Blackmon even. He's big, 6'4" 233 lbs, and has good hands, but he has big character questions. 3k talked about Jeffery a little the other night on Turf Show Radio, and we'll be talking about a lot more down the road.
Wes Bunting over at the National Football Post looked another prospect that's likely to get picked in the first round, Stanford OT Jonathan Martin. Martin's in the second tier of tackles in the draft, below Matt Kalil, and probably below Riely Reiff too.
Martin's probably a guy who would be in play for the Rams if they had a lower pick in the first round, like, say, from trading down. Anyway, Bunting gives him a mediocre report. He sees an more finesse tackle, a guy that could struggle with pass rushers. It's a good read.

Blackmon or bust.
Blackmon is Bruce/Holt 2.0 only bigger and stronger. i rather have him then just some tall target. Blackmon is much stronger then Jeffery and has a much better work ethic(yes i saw the pictures of Jeffery in the last offseason of him overwieght.) Blackmon is my choice without a doubt.
If we trade down and lose out on Blackmon i will be pissed off, but as long as we pick Floyd or Jeffery i wont be super pissed. I just have a massive man crush on Blackmon. just my personal opinion.

I agree
This combine is gonna screw with all the idiots heads. Put pads on and run a 40, Put pads on an push off a db. Blackmon or what? No impact player after him until Trent IMHO.
Da Rookie - January 6, 2012
I'd like him if it a bi-product of the trade for our #2 spot
But to take him 2nd overall………….well, that just won’t happen
DCRamFan - January 5, 2012
Trade the pick
Please he is no where near the level of Bruce or Holt. They had flat out speed with out question. I would not take him 2nd overall to many WR turn into bust. To me it seems WR -Dline are the two hardest spots to draft. Trade the pick sign a proven vet @ WR . Then draft best player @ CB,LB,O-LINE or D-Tackle… Maybe M.Floyd is on the board with the 1st pick in 2nd which the Rams get….
SHAWN .B - January 5, 2012
We took Bruce
with the 4th pick of the 2nd round (6th receiver chosen).
So I guess experts and scouts thought he was kind of flawed…
Le Ram - January 5, 2012
Sanu in second with Clevelands 2 nd round
RAMSALLTHEWAY - January 5, 2012 via mobile
3k says Sanu
is 3rd at best unless he blows up the combine, which I doubt. He’d be a steal in the 3rd.
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
We ??
Nice to see a fan post.
Da Rookie - January 6, 2012
i agree
I dnt want to miss out on blackmon like d.jackson
Ramzman18 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
WR
Everyone’s on the Blackmon bus thats cool i like him to. But no one knows what he runs in the 40. If he runs slow he will probly get jammed @ the line by coners. Look @ the size of the guys @ CB now see Seattle. Coming from college WR’s struggle when pressed. Thats why his speed is key. The rams have a roster full of 4.6 guys they need a burner. Brandon Lyold is not a burner he is a great # 2 WR .. Overpay Colston then draft a Blackmon of M.Floyd . But im just a fan. Perfect world sign a proven vet WR drop down in the draft get a WR 1st pick in the 2nd O-line or D-tackle …. GO RAMS!
SHAWN .B - January 5, 2012
Really were talking about 40 times
Ask Oakland how that’s going. Just because you’re fast doesn’t mean you won’t get jammed at the line, that’s not a good reason to not get him. Jerry rice didn’t post that good of a 40 time, yes exception but not a rule I know but its not a reason to discount.
We need playmalers and I’d rather get blackmon then overlay for for one in FA who may or not work out.
RG31 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
also
no guarantee we get a FA. We’re talking Desean, Vincent, Manningham, Colston……those guys are pretty damn popular. A draft spot is certain…
DCRamFan - January 5, 2012
Exactly
We probably don’t even have the money to even bring one of them in, plus there’s no guaranteeing they’ll come even if we do throw dollars at them.
RG31 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
Rice was 4.7,
I think Fitz was 4.6. 4.6 is pretty common among receivers and running backs. It’s their football speed that is good.
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
Yea I highly doubt he runs lower than 4.7
And he is quick and creates separation after the catch.
RG31 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
4.65 that's my hopeful bet
4.7 is more likely
King Sam Rules! - January 5, 2012 via mobile
Why sign a proven vet
AND draft one in the 1st? This is a pretty deep receiver draft, I’d much rather take DeCastro if we trade down into the 9th spot or so. Dude is as good as Kalil but is a lower pick because he’s a guard.
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
only way I'm not taking Blackmon
is if Adam Schefter Tweets that Vincent Jackson WANTS to be a Ram
DCRamFan - January 5, 2012
My take is,
why completely waste the value of a #2 pick on a receiver who would have been out of the top 10 in last year’s draft when you might be able to get 2 or 3 EXTRA first round picks in the next few years to move down a bit? There are some damn good o-lineman in this draft, and I’m not quite sure Michael Floyd isn’t the best receiver in this draft anyway.
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
Oh, I agree
I don’t even know who DeCastro is……..really don’t care. Dont want him a Rams uni next year
DCRamFan - January 5, 2012
Best interior lineman
by far in this draft, probably to the level of the Steelers’ Pouncey. He’s as elite as Kalil at a less elite spot, and we pretty much need help on every position on the line outside of Dahl.
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
Yelp but all thats jist assumptions
We don’t know where blackmon would have been valued in last years draft because he didn’t enter, so that’s invalid. As for the olinemen your rout but for this discussion we will have to wait til after the combine and all to make a decision.
RG31 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
Pre-combine
he probably would have been ahead of Jones. Post-combine, no way in hell. Jones proved to be a freak of nature that not a single scout expected, and keep in my mind, he was really close to falling out of the top 10 too until the Falcons traded the farm to get him. And please, we all speculate this kind of stuff year in and year out anyway, so let’s not act like it’s invalid because it’s a player you want this year.
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
No because we dont know how Blackmon would have done in the combine
So to a point it is invalid because we just don’t know, how do you know he wouldn’t have posted a great combine and went up the boards. You could be right but still just don’t know.
RG31 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
I know what you're saying,
but you’re only saying it because it’s a player you want badly this year that’s being put down. I’m sure you don’t use that logic when you’re the one speculating about this player or that in previous years. It’s no different than what is said about any quarterback who stays for one more year, and Barkley will go through it next year as well. And yeah, it is a moot point if he blows up at the combine, but just like Jones last year, not a soul expects that.
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
Haha I have to support
We need playmakers and I highly doubt we get one in FA. He sold me at the bowl game haha
RG31 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
I agree,
and I like Blackmon. I think we could easily trade down to Washington or Cleveland and possibly get him (probably won’t last lower as the best receiver). But I’m still not sold that Floyd isn’t the best receiver long term. He was kind of forgotten about last year but had a hell of a year with some erratic QB play (pretty much what Jeffery should have done).
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
It woukd be nice if he fell to the 2nd round
I think he has 1st wr potential, just worried about his injuries.
RG31 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
It's simple...
Notre Dame Sucks. Michael Floyd sucks. I’d rather have Malcolm…
DCRamFan - January 5, 2012
Yes they do :)
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
And beating the press
has a lot to do with how you use your hands, not speed.
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
We need a LT who can handle Bull-Rushers.
If Martin can’t, then he’s not our guy. That will be the key. Can Martin handle it.
look closer - January 5, 2012
What if we sign Jared Gaither?
diehardram87 - January 5, 2012
lets make a deal with south carolina..
1 pick for spurrier, alshon, and gilmore?
Rando - January 5, 2012 via mobile
how about Eagles get Spags
we get Desean
DCRamFan - January 5, 2012
can we give spags for samuels
and mcdelusional for jackson?
Rando - January 5, 2012 via mobile
LOL McDelusional.
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
SPEED KILLS
Yeah 40 times matter ! SALAS ,PETTIS ,LOYLD & the rest .All of em catch the ball get tackled or go down. The Rams have the worst YAC i’ve ever seen. So yes 40 times do matter if you dont get a guy who can get on top of a defense it’s gonna be THE SAME OLD SORRY ASS RAMS! If you ever watched a game you would notice the differnce in coverage when DX comes in the game.
SHAWN .B - January 5, 2012
Uh huh
So jerry rice and Larry Fitz apparently can’t get separation huh? And hayward bay is tearing it up in the NFL isn’t he? Yelp 40 times definitely count big.
RG31 - January 5, 2012 via mobile
YAC you need agility to elude tackles.
Those are the bubble screen guys that break two or three tackles to turn a 2-3 yard gain into a 10-15, not the guys who get passed their man 25 yards downfield.
douchiedude - January 5, 2012
Welker
