2012 NFL Free Agents: Will New England Pursue Rams WR Brandon Lloyd?

Staying with the St. Louis Rams might not be that bad for wide receiver Brandon Lloyd.

Staying with the St. Louis Rams might not be that bad for wide receiver Brandon Lloyd.

It's strange to think of Brandon Lloyd as a member of the St. Louis Rams. He played here for an 11-game stretch, and is now set to be a free agent this year. At one point, he made it clear that he would like to continue playing for Josh McDaniels, now with New England. When the Rams hired Jeff Fisher, Lloyd opened his stance, letting it be known that he was open to that option as well. A recent update from Pro Football Weekly speculates that the Patriots could still pursue Lloyd.

It comes in a mock draft from Nolan Nawrocki, the guy who famously trashed Cam Newton prior to last year's draft, one of many to trash Newton. When you read his comment, which comes in the explanation of the Rams picking Justin Blackmon second, it sounds like he's just regurgitating Lloyd's past statements, not having updated his narrative.

The Patriots have a number of issues to address during the offseason, starting with a free agent of their own, Wes Welker. That doesn't automatically rule out Lloyd reuniting with McDaniels, but it does make for a complicating factor in Lloyd's future with McDaniels.

We'll see what happens. The Rams would be well-advised to try and re-sign Lloyd, while still scouring the draft for wide receivers in the first and second round. Of course, the Patriots can offer him a chance to get to the Super Bowl and work with Tom Brady.

G-MEN! G-MEN! G-MEN!

Don’t do it, Lloyd. Sam NEEDS you!

Ochocinco ring a bell?

He’d be stupid to go there. You see what they did to Ochocinco. What a waste of talent.

cause ocho is a west coast reciever who couldnt run the pats offense

lloyd has been in that offense for years

regardless

Ocho has been virtually non existent in NE, compared to his role with the Bengals. If Lloyd is smart, he will see that as his likely comparison choice too, be great on a sucky team (Rams for now) or suck on a great team (Pats).

yea but ocho

has already said that he is struggling with the playbook. lloyd over there without facing a doubteam because of welker gronk and hernandez…dam

I see that

but where does Branch fit into all this?

i think the pats either cut ocho or branch
Ocho I think.

there is history with Branch, and then there’s the stated Ocho underachievments in NE

I think

Ochocinco becomes the SB MVP ha. of course TB wins it, but just thinkin, welker, hernandez, GRONK; all getting a lot of attention. I think someone surprises everyone in the SB and has a breakout game. why not Ochocinco in single coverage against a #3 CB?

sign him

in STL; he has said in interviews how he wants to be used as a primary WR and as a key component. He gets that for sure if he stays with the Rams even if we go get some young talented starters this off season. If he were to follow McD to NE, yes he’s have Brady and a Super Bowl contender every year for now BUT he would have a much more limited role.
So there’s the question, stay on a lower-tier team (for now) and be a top dog, or go to a top tier team and just be ochocinco’s water boy (85 is already all the other WRs beotch on the Pats too!!!)…

+1000

The Patriots offense is really tight-end-centric

… plus, how did the mighty Holt do in NE ?

Holt was at the very end of his career

Thats hard to compare, he had battled injuries, and eventually wound up on injured reserve with the Patriots. LLoyd while 30, still has a few good years left. Holt was 34 when he signed with the Pats and it was obvious he wasn’t the same player he once was.

True, but I think in NE he will be under utilized, plus they need to resign Welker. NE doesn’t like to invest too much money. I don’t see them keeping Welker and signing Lloyd, I think its one or the other.

I like Lloyd and

see his talents, but NO-WAY do the pats even contemplate letting Welker go free just so they can sign Lloyd. Again, I like Lloyd and all, I don’t want him to leave the Rams, but c’mon, Welker is a key ingredient in NE

It depends on who values him the most....

In New England, he would be the 3rd or 4th option. Here in STL, he is a potential #1 or #2. Is Deion Branch an FA this year? He might be able to replace him, maybe.

But would they let Branch go again

just so McD can get Lloyd to come play with him? Doesn’t make sense on the surface, but it is McDaniels we’re talking about I guess, who knows what kind of decisions he’ll be making if he gets to make the personnel calls on O.

Resign him NOW

We need Brandon and at least another quality WR. Give Bradford the right weapons so he has a chance to be successful (implicit is the need of upgrading the OL). It would be bad news is Lloyd leaves… we would have even more holes to plug.

Who cares what this Nolan Nawrocki says? He's just going over the Lloyd/McDaniels history...

Brandon would be better off as a no.1 receiver on the Rams squad, helping guys like Salas and whoever we pick in the draft to become better players, whilst helping this team become a success.

WR Corp

Lets not forget Amendola comes back so if Lloyd stays which it sounds like he wants to plus Amendola and a potential top WR out of the draft will make next season look real promising. Also lets not forget having some nice WR acorss the board helps take some pressure off of the OL.

plus salas was playing great before the injury!

Pettis will have a hard time keeping his job in STL next year

peyton manning is NOT retiring
you're right

he’s playing O-line for the Rams

Yuck ...

… while watching his ( Mannings ) dust up w/Saturday, really shows what type of player he is. Spags would not have wanted Peyton !

Lloyd

Lloyd will not be a Ram. Pats have same cap as us. He will replace Ocho

really?

if so why would he want crap clock time? here he is bound to get more touches, more looks and be more included in the offense – makes no sense to me why he wouldn’t at least listen to an offer from us
