The St. Louis Rams are in the process of filling out their coaching staff. Nevertheless, they have boots on the ground in Mobile this week watching prospects at the Senior Bowl. Through a drip drop of information here and there, we're getting a picture of which players the Rams have been talking to, a few of them anyway.
Contrary to a report that popped up on Twitter recently, the Rams do have staff in Mobile. In addition to the scouting staff held over under Mike Williams, until the front office changes over, Mike Waufle is on the scene decked out in Rams gear, according to Jim Thomas.
A group of Rams people were seen today talking to Alabama LB Courtney Upshaw, according to Shane P. Hallam at Draft Countdown.
Wait? Upshaw's a 3-4 rush linebacker, right?

Most tend to think of him as a strongside backer in a 3-4. He has a tenacity for getting to the passer, but coverage isn't his bag. He's also likely to be picked early in the first round, so why exactly would the Rams be talking to him?
Good football players and good players. Coaches will find a way to fit them into their plans, the good ones anyway. Rams DC Gregg Williams talked yesterday about being more focused on the personnel than trying to fit them into a scheme.
Some are now seeing the potential for Upshaw as a 4-3 defensive end. Check out this note about Upshaw from Tony Pauline at SI.com on Tuesday:
A point of concern in Courtney Upshaw's game is the limited speed he shows on the field. While he's effective rushing the passer out of a three-point stance, Upshaw looks very limited in his ability to pursue and catch the ball-handler from the backside when stood up at linebacker.
Alabama's Courtney Upshaw is now being used at defensive end and looks good. He put offensive tackle Matt McCants of UAB on his bottom with a powerful bull-rush, then did the same to James Brown of Troy State.
At 6'1" 271 lbs, some are questioning Upshaw's height as a 3-4 linebacker. That's vastly overstated. He looks like a player who has the kind of talent to play anywhere he wants to, so long as a team is smart enough to use his skills.
For Rams fans, the bigger question may be why the Rams would be looking at another defensive lineman. The answer is simple: good football players are good football players. If Upshaw is on the board in the top 15 picks if the Rams trade down, they would have to consider him.
Mocking the Draft has a scouting report on Upshaw out today.
Waufle, the Rams new defensive line coach, was in the same position with the New York Giants from 2004 to 2009. During that time, the Giants drafted Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka in consecutive years despite having Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora on the roster already.
Another player the Rams were seen chatting with was LSU safety Brandon Taylor, according to Alfie Crow from SB Nation and Big Cat Country, our Jaguars site.
A likely third day pick, Taylor was overshadowed by the big names in the LSU secondary. He was still a pretty important part of that defense. Fisher has had a good track record with mid- and late-round defensive backs.
Here's a scouting report on Taylor from the National Football Post.

Taylor needs to work on his tackling. Too much arm tackling for the NFL

The whole team.........
current and future, including offensive players need to work on TACKLING! How many times (and this will not be the only time I bring this up) were there broken tackles by the other team in every facet including turnovers.

A good player will find a way to produce. People laughed at the Broncos, me included, for drafting Von Miller, who was seen as the top 3-4 OLB, to play in the 4-3. How did that turn out?
3-4 or 4-3, if he can play he’ll find a way on the field. Put him next to Laurinaitis and maybe our run D improves.
TheSmart1 - January 25, 2012
Miller had the tools to play in either 4-3 or 3-4 defensive system IMO.
6’3", 240lbs, 4.5s 40 & his potential was thru the roof [yep, I’m a fan]. He’s a special player and yes it proves an athletic, smart football player will make his way on the field and prove he should be there. I wish we had more players like that on our team.
RamsFan1979 - January 25, 2012
I agree with that.
I can’t wait to for the combine to see how athletic these guys really are. Who knows, maybe Upshaw makes a huge impression.
TheSmart1 - January 25, 2012
it does not really matter the scheme they played under in college
a good lb is a good lb regardless. i would love for the rams to get vontage burfict. the kid is going to be something special in the league. yes he plays inside but he could easily move to the outside.
hbwb - January 25, 2012
Burflict could be good, but he plays with too much emotion.
Sometimes his emotion gets the better of him on the field and he draws a penalty or three. He could make a good SLB, but needs coaching IMO.
RamsFan1979 - January 25, 2012
You forget that we have coaching now

i hope all our guys play with emotion
every single down. do not need players that are not passionate about the game. we have had enough of those types if you ask me.
vontage reminds me of lt. there will never be another lawrence taylor imo but one who plays the game in a similar style would be fine with me.

ummmmm
So I’m 50/50 on Upshaw I see pros and cons BUT this Taylor kid. Really? Was I supposed to be impressed with that video vs Alabama. Looks like Justin King part II. No thanks

YES! UPSHAW!
King Sam Rules! - January 25, 2012 via mobile
not seeing tape on upshaw
Is potentially an issue in fairly assessing him (as in, it is an issue)
However, based on many written reports:
Simply put: short, thick, one dimensional & projected high in the 1st at either OLB or DE means avoid. Neither position need be addressed so high by such an awkward player.
Also, Tuck was a 3rd round pick and Kiwanuka was I don’t know but something late-ish. If Upshaw was a 4th rounder I’d say why not if upside is so high but right now he’s got too many questions to even consider him with our pick IMO

Upshaw is a monstrous talent
Trade with Cleveland, take Blackmon and Upshaw
King Sam Rules! - January 25, 2012 via mobile
Most mocks I've seen have him going before #22
Think he falls that far? I could see taking him there but not top 10.
jmo53 - January 25, 2012 via Android app
Well, I'm basing this off how some players who don't have insane hype fall down the draft (Quinn woulda been a top 5 pick if he'd had hype)
Itd be hard for him to fall that far yes, but that is where I would take him.
King Sam Rules! - January 25, 2012 via mobile
yeah quinn did have hype
but the question on his health and the fact he missed a whole year caused him to fall a bit. also the fact qb’s were going like hotcakes ate up what 5 spots earlier? one nfc pro personnel source said he was the best edge rusher in the draft.

Upshaw
( Jag Fan ) Upshaw has alot of talent , but i wouldnt compare him to von miller , miller has alot more explosiveness to him . I wouldnt take upshaw in the top ten , i see him as a mid 1rst rd pick
