2012 NFL Mock Draft: Rams Try It Again

The fine folks at SB Nation have rolled out their first postseason 2012 NFL mock draft, reflecting the draft order for non-playoff teams. The St. Louis Rams pick second in the draft this year. What they will do with that pick should provide ample conversation as the months go by leading up the draft.

Lots more to come today, be sure to follow us on Twitter @TurfShowTimes to stay on top of it all. Also, be sure to follow us on Facebook as well.

And how did things shape up in this mock draft?

Star-divide

Naturally, Andrew Luck went first overall to the Colts. As for the Rams, they hopefully found their next left tackle, a guy to fill the void left by Orlando Pace, something Jason Smith failed to do. Rodger Saffold is just too overmatched to last on the left side, as this season revealed. So it's Matt Kalil for the Rams.

Steve Spagnuolo and Billy Devaney are gone, reportedly. Those two drafted Jason Smith with the second overall pick in 2009, but Smith has been a bust, with many questioning whether or not he has the passion required for an offensive lineman in the NFL. Kalil has passion and the skills to match. This pick could be an attractive trading chip to quarterback needy teams like Cleveland, Miami and Washington. The Rams could certainly use additional draft picks to plug big holes in their roster.

The real question is whether or not the Rams can trade that pick. With the Vikings picking third and already having a quarterback, teams may simply just target that spot.

If the Rams do keep that pick, there will be some debate about whether or not to take Kalil or Justin Blackmon, a much needed wide receiver. What do you think?

Adam Schefter says Colts could take RG3 with the first pick, but I'm not buying it.
I would take a playmaker. Blackmon, I would go o-line with 2nd pick and free agency
Common Sense

1st off,… I will believe the Spags and Devaney rumors when I actually see that they’re gone.
If they should stay I honestly have no clue what would happen in Aprils Draft, other than the fact we’ll end up with an early round TE.
What should happen is one of 2 common sense scenarios;
!. Trade the pick and accumulate as much help as possible.
2. Take Kalil with the 2nd pick over all.

Well apparently there are reports that Spags has already been let go.

And I hope the first scenario is what happens.

Yes

I hope so too.
But for whatever reason we can’t pull the trigger on a trade. Then Kalil makes the most sense. As much as we all would prefer a “playmaker”, this season should have made it clear how important the LT position is. It’s not glamorous, but the truth is, it all starts up front.
For those who don’t like the pick, I understand. And if Jason Smith panned out I’d be the 1st to say we should go for a Blackmon. But if you really want to see this team progress then we need to protect our QB.

Nothing on Devaney yet, I hope he's next

We cannot waste another pick on another offensive lineman! Seriously. We need playmakers! I’d try to trade out of that 2nd spot. Maybe you can still get Blackmon. Or if we can’t trade out just draft Blackmon in the 2 spot.

Kalil

There is a reason we have had a carousel of QBs this year. The OL has been sorry. What I think would be a good OL next year would be from left to right Kalil, Smith, Wragge, Dahl, Saffold. The draft is deeper at WR that LT. You give a good QB time and they can make WR better than they appear. By all accounts Sam is a good QB.

Solidify the offensive line

Look at the Cowboys against the Giants on Sunday night. Dallas has the play-makers at WR, but Romo had no time for the his receivers to get open before the left side of his line collapsed in on him. That’s where the Rams are now.

Picking Blackmon would be great, but the Rams have a bigger need protecting their QBs and opening holes for Jackson & Co. Therefore, I feel the pick is better spent on Kalil as a true Left Tackle, moving Saffold to Right Tackle (where he belongs), moving Jason Smith to Left Guard (he has the ability to be a very good Guard in this league, but doesn’t possess the foot speed necessary to play the Tackle position regularly). A line like this would help not only Bradford, but give time for the receivers currently on the team to gain some space and make the current team much better.

At that point I’d pick the best available Wide Receiver at #2. Once again, Blackmon would be great, but I don’t know if: #1 his talent level is justified at the second overall pick; #2 his talent level is that much greater than what this team can get at their second round pick.

Kalil, so the qb has more than 1.2 sec's to get the ball to playmakers.
If we end up with 3 picks in the first 2 rounds

I think LaMichel James would be a good pick somewhere. Cliff Harris could be a 5th or 6th round steal too.

The Rams have no backbone (OL). Leaning Kalil right now.

We’re rebuilding…again…(sigh). Too many holes to spend a bunch of dough on top quality wide out. Number 2 picks aren’t cheap and OL seems to be less risky expenditure than WR. I’m just glad Devaney and Spags won’t be making the decision. May the Rams build a nice organization with intelligent approach to game for long-term. I think that means stocking up on OL, Secondary, LB and DL in that order of importance. Only draft a WR or RB if incredible bargain.

draft

I may be vilified for saying this, but why not take RG? what if they take a guard or a receiver and he ends up being another bust or mediocre player. you have a chance to grab a dynamic playmaker and they would not have to pay him like they paid bradford due to the new rookie salary cap. I look at it this way, they have had top picks year after year and they haven’t done much with them and bradford just did not look good this year. sure he didn’t have protection enough or top notch receivers but a lot of his throws looked off. maybe this was the injury I don’t know but I would gamble and take griffen and make the two compete for a job or trade bradford. the rams need some excitement.

Trade The Pick

For the best offer. IMO the best offer would be a combination of not only draft picks; but promising young talent as a part of the compensation package. Other things to consider: How far down are you willing to move in the first round, who are the players that may be available at that lower position, If a decision is made to trade down; is the compensation attractive and plentiful enough to use to move back into the first round if need be. For the right compensation; trading the 1st round pick could prove to be the right choice.
