It's only been 24 hours since the news broke that Jeff Fisher had opted to take the St. Louis Rams head coaching job. Already the veteran coach is lining up his staff. The Post-Dispatch is reporting today that Fisher is interested in hiring former New York Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer for the same position in St. Louis.
Schottenheimer's system is more like the one McDaniels runs than Pat Schurmur's.

Son of long-time NFL head coach Marty, the younger Schottenheimer parted ways with the New York Jets earlier this month. He left amid the kind of turmoil fans that's come be associated with the Jets. He benched Santonio Holmes in the last game of the season after the receiver's, um, less than enthusiastic efforts pissed off his teammates. Mark Sanchez was also the subject of constant criticism, with many believing he was not good enough to be the franchise quarterback the team expected him to be when they drafted him in 2009.
Schottenheimer's offense struggled this season, but much of that had to do with personnel issues. The running game struggled, putting more pressure on Sanchez to make the offense work.
The Jets emphasized the running game at the behest of Rex Ryan, who inherited Schottenheimer from the Mangini years. Despite his boss' run-first insistence, which probably also had to do with Sanchez, Schottenheimer is no simple West Coast guy.
He spent four years in San Diego as the quarterbacks coach, working with Drew Brees and Philip Rivers. His roots are in the Air Coryell system, and he puts a high level of responsibility on his quarterbacks for making reads and changing calls at the line, something Bradford struggled with under McDaniels. Schottenheimer would be a McDaniels-lite. Hopefully, a full season to prepare and some smart moves for talent at the right places will help.
On a side note, it makes the possibility of keeping Kellen Clemens in the mix for the backup job more likely. Schottenheimer coached Clemens from 2006-2010 in New York.
Fisher is getting staff rounded out rather quickly. On Friday, it was reported that he plans to hire Gregg Williams as his defensive coordinator.

Being from NJ...
I will say that all of my Jets fans friends absolutely hated this guy.
Who knows if they were just misplacing blame or knew what was up. But because of that, when I hear Schottenheimer, I cringe.
Then again, Fisher is an offensive guy so he’ll be involved in the forming of the offense with its style and philosophy.
Either way, this is such an important hire because we can’t keep changing systems on Bradford or we’ll be slowly ruining a young QB with potential.
KDidz - January 14, 2012
nj guy
Bein from NJ as well I think Schotty’s flaws with the Jets are overblown..Sanchez and Bradford not even comparable..Sanchez can’t function in a complicated system..You could do a lot worse than Schotty..that bein said..Id prefer somebody else lol
jerzymook - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Haha
I hear ya. I’m from NJ so lived in NC this last year so I didn’t get to watch the Jets much. When I did their offense wasn’t good, but it definitely seemed like personnel was an issue. I also heard his philosophy didn’t mix with Rex’s. So it could be possible.
I don’t want to have to hear it from my Jets friends though if they do sign him. Even if he proves them wrong, I’d have to wait 9 months.
KDidz - January 14, 2012
And Bradford can?
Granted he wasn’t very healthy this year, but he looked lost trying to run McDaniels system
DiscoJer - January 14, 2012
Good question
From what I’ve seen so far, Sanchez can more than Bradford can.
HornIt - January 14, 2012
You heard wrong.
Sanchez is the reason the Jets don’t have two rings. He is at best a pedestrian QB.
STLRambler - January 15, 2012
Truth...
RG31 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
When you visit the Jets SBNation site, public enemy #1 is Schottenheimer
I think we should look a bit more before buying. There are a few other OC candidates I hope we’ll look at before deciding
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
Agreed.
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
Deciding is not your job now is it Doug Fisher does the Deciding here now,you should have taken your chance while Spags was here
Fisher will pick who ever he thinks is the right man for each job ,thats all you need to know hahaha
Rammon105 - January 15, 2012
Who is Doug Fisher?
jreg88 - January 15, 2012
Doug Fisher for GM!
Ramon’s wisdom knows no bounds!
FailureDrill - January 15, 2012 via Android app
the only people who could run the KC offense were the Chiefs offensive players of the early 2000
and that’s what Schott runs, but he does not plan a strategy to match up against the opposing defense, he just runs plays whether they work or not, he may become a better coach one day, but Jets fans were celebrating when he left
MetalVagabond - January 15, 2012
Fisher is an offensive guy?
He played DB in Chicago under Buddy Ryan then became a defensive coach in Philadelphia. He was once upon a time LA Rams Defensive Coordinator under Robinson. Later he was a defensive coach in Houston under Buddy Ryan until Buddy left to become head coach of the Cardinals at which time he became the Defensive Coordinator. It was when Jack Pardee got fired that Fisher was promoted to Head Coach. Fisher has NEVER been an offensive coach, or player.
Ron Winkler - January 15, 2012
I would prefer the other Schottenheimer
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
I'd prefer Chud, but he'll never leave Carolina for another OC gig
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
Yeah he's not leaving an OC job for another OC job
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
If I were Jeff Fisher
I would consider Brian Schottenheimer as a OC for the rams, he would be much better than Mcdaniels nor Shurmur as they were as OC.
stllcat7406 - January 14, 2012
How's Todd Haley enjoying the unemployment?
Joe Mazzi - January 14, 2012
You think Fisher would get along with him? I think he'd be worthy of an interview at the very least?
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
I guess he's worth a look.
I’m not so sure that my stomach could handle going from Josh McDaniels to Todd Haley in one year, though.
Joe Mazzi - January 14, 2012
lol Having a grubby guy on the sidelines might be funny though?
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
Same as Spags lmfao
Rammon105 - January 15, 2012
Sanchez sucks
that’s the problem. I feel bad for this fella…….ya know, cuz Sanchez sucks
DCRamFan - January 14, 2012
Sanchez is too lazy to understand the offense.
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
I should probably write for a living
DCRamFan - January 14, 2012
Oprah would approve.
Joe Mazzi - January 14, 2012
I'm hoping......
that Sam can suck to the tune of 26 TD passes in a season and a couple conference championship games soon.
Will he suck that bad next year…please?
HornIt - January 14, 2012
If our defense takes us to a conference championship
I’ll tally up Sam’s TD’s…..
DCRamFan - January 15, 2012
Maybe Sam will win a conference championship and not choke
This just in, the US is sending Sanchez to Iran to overthrow Ahmadinejad.
STLRambler - January 15, 2012
This would be my favorite for the job
him and Gregg Williams would be a awesome staff
Brick Top - January 14, 2012
Pretty Star studded staff.
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
bedazzled!
DCRamFan - January 14, 2012
Personally, I'd rather have Gray than Williams, but both are good choices
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
Im a little petrified of Gregg
I don’t think the Rams have the right personnel for him…if a team beats a blitz, who on this team could stop them? Do you trust our secondary? OLB’s? I sure as hell dont
Eric Nagel - January 14, 2012 via mobile
That's why there FA and the draft.
People act like our team will be exactly the same next season smh…Fisher will change the team up
Brick Top - January 14, 2012
you cant fill that many holes
I’m concerned about the secondaries health. Its not like Fisher is going to magically fix all the problems with a snap of his fingers.
Eric Nagel - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Not with a snap of his fingers...
But with a pull of his moustache…
x Nightwing x - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Do you guys forget that our Secondary will be healed by the start of next season?
Its not like they’re dead… They are coming back healthy.
m0pi1 - January 14, 2012
you know what go make your own team lol Fisher runs this show buddy
Rammon105 - January 15, 2012
Scary hire
If They hire Brian and he is successful with Brasford that will put him on the fast track to a head coaching job in 2013, and then we would be looking at 4 OCs in 4 yrs.
TexasRam - January 14, 2012 via mobile
So we should hire someone who has no chance of success?
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
YOu have to hire the best guy out there
Brick Top - January 14, 2012
Being in the position of having coordinators becoming coaches is good for a team
means your successful. Look at the Pats, can still find success with many different OCs, but they do have Brady.
Brick Top - January 14, 2012
Yeah that's exactly what I'm saying... Sarcasm
Not someone that is currently interviewing for head coaching jobs and installing another complex offense. It’s no secret that Schott is wanting to position himself for a HC job. Stability is what our high $ qb needs we can all agree. Find an offensive system and stick with it
TexasRam - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Sam need a QB coach. Any OC that wants to take on the OC and QB coach job doesn't get my vote
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
Also QB coach can take over OC job if Shotty leaves for HC job
Brick Top - January 14, 2012
Agreed.
Been there done that.
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
Doug who told you that you have a vote lmfao
Rammon105 - January 15, 2012
Huey Lewis and the News?
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
Plus a star packed staff! lol
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
We are the world?
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
I was just confused about why Huey Lewis and the News were singing the national anthem at candlestick.
Doc. Brown must have something to do with this.
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
If I remember correctly, Fisher used to hang out with Huey years ago
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
Awesome.
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
Scary
I’m new here and I just have to say this scares the living daylights out of me. I have a lot of Jets fan friends and all of them loathe him and they blame him completely for Sanchez’s shortcomings. I think we should go west coast if we could.
Plus, if SJax had issues with McDaniels, he will with Schotty too. Just look at the Xmas eve game between the Giants and Jets…(59 passes to I think 12 rushes)
NYCMike324 - January 14, 2012
I would like for the Rams to look at more candidates before we hire Brian.
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
Plus, isn't this star studded staff going to cost a bunch of $$$? I know there salaries don't count against the cap, but it may affect cash Stan would spend on other needs?
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
Maybe
but then again he is one of the richest owners in the NFL.
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
I'm excited for the Wal-Mart Super Dome.
Joe Mazzi - January 14, 2012
Cmon man
i don’t think so.

Brick Top - January 14, 2012

dbcouver - January 14, 2012
no way.... Money isn't an issue here. Stan wants the best. And will pay top dollar for it.
m0pi1 - January 14, 2012
Stan spends more then that on condoms lol relax Doug
Rammon105 - January 15, 2012
Sanchez SUCKS the shortcomings are the tools he has to work with not the OC lol
Rammon105 - January 15, 2012
Both HC's in Missouri now have mustaches.
Fisher’s makes him look like either a cop or a porn star.
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
Martz
is lloking for a job?
RWRAMS28 - January 14, 2012
If Sam wasn't fucked up behind this O-line last year
He would be if we hired martz
RAMpage28 - January 14, 2012
Better to just kill Bradford...
Than to put him through the slow death that is the Martz “no protection” O…
x Nightwing x - January 14, 2012 via mobile
I trust Fisher OC hire (Brian Schottenheimer ) over
internet chat-room NY Jet fans.
Thomas W - January 14, 2012
+1000
m0pi1 - January 14, 2012
If Fisher wants him, than he should get him.
We need a cohesive coaching staff. One that gets along with each other.
And if CJF is going to get all the blame anyway, then he should have
the staff he thinks will work best together.
Then we don’t have to nit-pick the staff during the season, we can address CJF directly.
Go Rams!……Go CJF…………..
look closer - January 14, 2012
well I'm willing to give who ever Fisher hires a chance and people panicking
as bad as people are saying. I think its ridiculous that people are already panicking when the off season hasn’t even started is ridicules he hasn’t even hired his OC and frankly I would take anything the NJ’s fans say with a grain of salt cause I think there prone to exaggeration and if a ram’s fan made any comments about any one they were considering hiring I think they would laugh and ridicule that person and not believe one thing. Bradford is more then capable of handling a complicated system and before you go and say no he can’t look at last year may I say that you should activate your 2 brain cells and realize he didn’t have a off season to really grasp Mc D’s system NO ONE DID that will not be the case this time he will have a full off season and mini camps to get down the system that Fisher puts in place whatever that may be.
Freewheeler2 - January 14, 2012
I was never high on Sanchez when he came out...
Sanchez is the problem with Sanchez, not Brian S. The Jets have coddled Sanchez since day 1.
VTramsFan - January 14, 2012
The only reason he was top 10 was because sam didnt come out
He’s been overrated since day one by the media.
RG31 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
your right VT
Rammon105 - January 15, 2012
More ties surfacing with Gregg Williams...
He’s a Missourian (however you spell it)

Rammon105 - January 15, 2012
Didn't shottenheimer
Begin when the jets had that whole back-to-back afc championship appearences?
Valley Ram - January 14, 2012
Just checked
He started in 07 and had 3 different qbs in penninton brett farve and clemens( yes the current rams qb) in his first 3 years before having sanchez in and in 09 and 2010 went to the afc championship. Just putting info on here.
Valley Ram - January 14, 2012
Williams possibly turn Rams in elite defense IMO
Few draft picks/ free-agents DTs/OLBs /CB
Thomas W - January 14, 2012
While its more McD than West
The Air Coryell system is a good combo of run to pass ratio. It also doesn’t require qb’s to make protection calls as much, it’s the play changing that is more required. It doesn’t throw everything on the qb like McD. Also, before Sanchez, young Shotty was good with qb development.
King Sam Rules! - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Also, since Jeff is known to believe in letting his coordinators have a lot of say in the complexities of the offense
Shotty would help keep this from turning into a really boring team if it works out
King Sam Rules! - January 14, 2012 via mobile
I hope Fisher doesn't hire Gregg Williams
as DC. The ’aints Defense Sucks. Needs to hire Mike Singletary for DC.
Steven M. - January 14, 2012
Part of the Saints D problems is how fast they score
They also can’t get a pass rush out of their front 4. Quinn and Long can handle that for the Rams
King Sam Rules! - January 14, 2012 via mobile
I mean how fast the Saints score
King Sam Rules! - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Well
he made no adjustments today in the last few drives and cost his team. Jenkins was getting abused all day by Davis and Williams made no adjustment when the game was on the line.
RWRAMS28 - January 14, 2012
Is their a DC in the league who can stop these TE's
The TE’s are takIng over the league
King Sam Rules! - January 14, 2012 via mobile
No doubt
but you talk about adjustments and he made none. If something is not working you have to try something else that’s all I am saying. He failed to do that yesterday.
RWRAMS28 - January 15, 2012
team is designed for offense
and that defense doesn’t get as much attention. Build shutdown defenses in Tenn
Brick Top - January 14, 2012
Ironically, last year
Greg Williams withdrew his name from consideration for for the Broncos’ HC job after the playoff loss to the Seahawks. His defense got annihilated by the Hawks.
Keski - January 14, 2012
Hiring Shotty may not be a bad thing
there are a few things to consider: Bradford is more talented than sanchez, and bradford wanted to keep mcdaniels for continuity, so this may be the closest thing we can get him. Since its a simpler form of the offense, it should take some pressure off. Also, don’t forget the huge amount of help bradford got from feely under shrumur, which should be similar to the type of help he could get from clemens under shotty. I guess we’ll find out soon enough, though.
elan82 - January 14, 2012
Lots of good points
King Sam Rules! - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Bradford is going to be in his third year...
Shouldn’t he be past needing help from a journeyman backup QB?
By all means, let him get a QB coach. But he needs to prove himself by not relying on a supposed veteran (who is no good).
DiscoJer - January 14, 2012
3rd year, 3rd OC
You don’t turn down help unless your an idiot. It wont be “he needs the help” it’s “it’s another person who can help”
King Sam Rules! - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Watching
Clemens play with some spark the last few games showed the guys really wants to play. If Schotty comes in and installs an O that Clemens already knows would it be out of this world to have an open competition at QB?
RWRAMS28 - January 14, 2012
Thad L. out played Sam in two preseasons but that meant nothing the even cut him lol
Rammon105 - January 15, 2012
Give me
Clemens anyday over Thad. Clemens will have an advantage over Sam because he would know the system. I am just asking will Sam have to prove to Fisher he is teh franchise QB he was drafted to be?
RWRAMS28 - January 15, 2012
I agree that a QB coach is a great idea
but having a journeyman backup that can tutor you on reads, calls and verbage for a new offense couldn’t hurt. I don’t think Sam “needs” help, but it’ll only make him better. BTW thanks for the backup KSR!
elan82 - January 14, 2012
I'm from ROTB
and I just want to congratulate you guys on your hiring of Jeff Fisher.
Alex Mann - January 14, 2012
More Importantly
We need someone who will be here LONG TERM. If Schottenheimer does good with Sam he’ll no doubt get a HC job somewhere else. I think we should hire the QB Coach of the Packers.
