I forgot that it has been less than two weeks since the St. Louis Rams ended their lost 2011 season. It's not one most fans will remember, nor should they, except for the whole historical lesson thing. A new era started officially for the Rams today, with the news that the team hired Jeff Fisher to be their next head coach.
It was the right move. They needed an established, experienced guy who knows how to get the most out of his players. Fisher may not have a Super Bowl ring, but he's coached team through turmoil and transition in an effective manner. As 3k pointed out earlier today, the Rams, and owner Stan Kroenke, made a statement today.
It was exactly the kind of statement they needed to make. Fans have been alienated by years of bad football. Just as people started to return to the Dome after a surprise 7-9 run in 2010. The team had to buy up unsold tickets in order to avoid a local blackout in their final game of this season.
There's a great big elephant in the room still with the Rams stadium issue and a stadium project awaiting a team in L.A. I'm not so naive to think that a move can't happen. Nevertheless, I have to tip my hat to the new administration at Rams Park, committed if silent ownership and a savvy front office focused on making deep, lasting connections with the fans.
On another note, I want give a big thanks to our community here at Turf Show Times. We've grown exponentially in recent weeks, and I'm really excited about the year ahead, especially free agency and the draft, which long timers here will tell you we cover left, right and upside down. Be sure to sign up for a membership on the site. Spout off in with a Fanpost.
And I know the social media thing isn't for everyone, but I hope you'll follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook. I plan to do some big things on those two platforms that link directly into our community here.

What's facebook
Is that on the interweb thingamajiggy?
81 Witness - January 14, 2012
Who was the last Super Bowl losing head coach the Rams hired?
HomerForTheRams - January 13, 2012
Dick Vermeil :)
Brick Top - January 13, 2012
How did that work out?
Joe Mazzi - January 13, 2012 via mobile
HORRIBLE!
Eric Nagel - January 13, 2012
I voted 'yes'
how do I vote ‘yes’ 100 more times
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
I don't think he's the best coach
But the Rams got the person they wanted. I can’t fault them for that.
So I voted yes.
Eric Nagel - January 13, 2012
who would you have liked to see us get?
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
I have no idea. I liked the idea of the Saints guy
I’m just saying I don’t think he’s not the best coach out there. I didn’t believe the hype of Fisher I guess.
Eric Nagel - January 13, 2012
the 'coordinators have failed as our HC's' theory didn't worry you?
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
No...
Eric Nagel - January 13, 2012
who would have you preferred that available?
Brick Top - January 13, 2012
There's really no way to know.
Did the year off make him rusty of recharge his batteries?
The team management made a commitment to get the best available coach – at least on paper. We didn’t cheap out on an inexperienced coordinator who might do well at an established team but can’t handle all our problems.
You have to like that regardless of what happens next.
ramdude - January 14, 2012
He is the best coach for the Rams Jeff will fix this we finaly have a real HC, with Spags we got what we paid for lol
Rammon105 - January 14, 2012
Me too.
Pekka for Predator Pontiff - January 14, 2012
Yes.
RAMpage28 - January 13, 2012
absolutamente si!
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
i hate fisher
Mostly because my dumbass friend is a titans fan. I think he suffered from being in that division w Manning for so long tho. So Im going to dismiss the 6 winning seasons in 17 or whatever the stat was. I guess it’s a good choice but I still don’t like him until I see results…
markg1127 - January 13, 2012 via mobile
you need new friends
Rite in da kisser!
fearsomefoursum - January 13, 2012
I'm just glad a HC has been hired.
Now he can use this time to make us a not so shitty team. Hopefully the play without the injuries.
Skunkburner - January 13, 2012 via mobile
Now he has to put his staff together
The most important part is his staff, that has been the biggest problem of the Rams in the past. Not having the proper staff that can teach the team to be winners, has been a problem
learning - January 13, 2012
Not the ideal choice, but the best out of what is out there.
leadhead - January 13, 2012
who was your ideal?
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
He wanted me to be HC, but I refused to take Kroenke's calls... lol
Douglas M - January 13, 2012
They called me but I would only accept it if 3k and Tevin could come
for some reason they refused
Brick Top - January 13, 2012
Missouri has a law in their Health code - "No more than two TST authors in a building at one time"
Douglas M - January 13, 2012
we could just move the team to the east side of the river where I live
Illinois has more liberal laws pertaining to TST authors in the same room
Brick Top - January 13, 2012
oh you have a bromance thats cute hahaha
Rammon105 - January 14, 2012
I've duct taped my fingers together
that you’re the next equipment manager
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
fingers crossed, that is
duct taping them together is just odd, unless there are 40oz. beers inside your hands
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012

I could only imagine the origami-like things
you could do with the towels. Nothing makes drying off after the seasons first win than to grab a towel made into a spider monkey

RAMpage28 - January 13, 2012
LOL! nice!
leadhead - January 13, 2012
out of the possibles pitched around, I think Gruden would be better.
leadhead - January 13, 2012
Neither Gruden is going anywhere...
Jon isnt leaving the booth and Jay isnt leaving the Bengals. Neither is leaving for ANY team, that was just assumptions of who people wanted, not even a possibility either of them would leave their respective positions.
jpcisco - January 13, 2012
The Bengals have done a great job of getting young talent on that team
I don’t see him being able to resist taking a HC job elsewhere, if they continue to improve. Dalton to AJ Green seemed to come pretty easily for them this season
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
Then why did he??
He refused to interview with the Rams or anyone else.
Brick Top - January 13, 2012
I wasnt suggesting that he'd be going anywhere this season
but I just see him being more sought out next year, if that offense continues to click (which I would think it would). My opinion is that his stock would only rise. I could be wrong, but it just seems like human nature to me that money would ultimately pull him out of his OC job if the inquiries were to continue. Seems clear to me he’s happy with his job right now though, so I won’t argue with you there
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
Yeah that is why I said fisher was the best of what was out there.
leadhead - January 13, 2012
lol, didnt see the earlier post just went off the last one. my bad
jpcisco - January 13, 2012
Oh yeah he is on the competition commitee so hopefully the Rams will finally get some fucking calls!!!!
leadhead - January 13, 2012
I'm very happy to announce that one of the people Stan Kroenke decided to keep in the FO is...Derinda Platt!

RAMpage28 - January 13, 2012
I know you won't read it. It violated your "more than two syllable words" law.
Douglas M - January 13, 2012
I won't be reading it because a much more interesting story is coming out.
It’s about paint drying, metal rusting, grass growing, and how much it rains in Seattle.
RAMpage28 - January 13, 2012
Damn that does sound interestin..

2) you have never heard of women mud wrestling?
King Sam Rules! - January 13, 2012 via mobile
I appreciate the slow start to the dream
as I understand you’re sleeping for hours, and dreams can seem like an eternity. I do not, however, care to put them in mud…….nor have I ever. Of course I’ve heard it of it, but in all honesty, in my dreams I’d be out of wet dirt and I’d be banging them. Questions?
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
That is also part of it
Usually involving banging in the shower haha. Or is that weird to?
King Sam Rules! - January 13, 2012 via mobile
see, now you've got a plan!
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
They start off with mud wrestling in bikinis
Then they lose the bikinis
Then they get in the shower to clean up
Then they get banged and/or bang each other while in the shower. That is the plan

Tyler Perry, through his cinematography, has truly captured the plight of the african american community.

I've always felt the Fisher has had a hair up his ass with The Rams
after his stint as the DC in LA and being let go. He’s always seemed as a doucher to me but I gave my approval on the fan poll. As a HC, he know what the F he’s doing and our team should start to look better as a whole now.
moy - January 13, 2012
I'd also like to say that "I am surprised that he sighned with us,
I’ve always thought he had a hatred for The Rams."

King Sam Rules! - January 13, 2012 via mobile
HA!
RAMpage28 - January 13, 2012
Best part of the hire IMO
is the potential coaching staff. I’m okay with Schotty. Keep in mind, he was a really hot coaching commodity two years ago. You gotta think Sanchez is that problem and not him.
douchiedude - January 13, 2012
Agreed.
No offense to Sanchez but he went to USC so he was doomed as an NFL QB.
RAMpage28 - January 13, 2012
Hahaha truth.
Carson was so close to breaking that until that knee shattering. I REALLLYY hope Barkley breaks it. If anyone is deserving as a person, it’s him.
douchiedude - January 13, 2012
Good luck yo Barkley but breaking that curse is going to be a challenge.
RAMpage28 - January 13, 2012
To be honest,
I don’t think Leinart and Sanchez ever had his amount of talent.
douchiedude - January 13, 2012
I don't follow college football very closely let along USC's football program
so I wouldn’t know about that.
RAMpage28 - January 13, 2012
Seahawks fan here.
This is good for the division and fantastic for your team. Fisher is an amazing guy, you are lucky to have him. Glad it worked out this way. NFC West is on the rise, bitches!
P.S. The happiest day of my life as a Seahawks fan will be when Steven Jackson retires.
shams - January 14, 2012
Good luck with the PS....and I'd think the Faulk retirement was sweeter
But thanks man. Met a ton of you at the game, a ton of you are dicks…a ton of you can’t keep up the shit talking after a 1-liner
sergey606 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Sorry you met some d-bags, we have our share for sure.
It’s not really a shit-taking sort of town. We sometimes try but usually fail.
So, what to do at number two, eh? What do you think? That pick is like the sexiest girl at the dance. Gonna be a lot of talk, as you know better than I.
shams - January 14, 2012
We need a great GM hired fast! I think a good wheeler-dealer could give the Rams an edge in the 2012 Draft
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
Yeah let's hope the new GM trades down for a lot of picks!
And I still had fun at the game, had my seahawk friends with me so no one would start anything; would be more fun if we had a competitive team
sergey606 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
lol
Rammon105 - January 14, 2012
hopefully our new gm is jewish,
i’d really like to get all we can for our #2…
Rando - January 14, 2012
As a long-time Titans fan, I wish you guys the best of luck.
That said, this whole saga has been something of a mystery to me. Yes, Jeff Fisher is a good coach who will make your team competitive most of the time. He is a mountain of stability and a players’ coach and all that.
But.
He is not Moses coming down off the mountain. In fact, if you look at his body of work, it is, in mathematical terms, the square root of what a guy like Marty Schottenheimer has done in his career. Literally HALF the career wins in about the same number (or more) of total starts.
More to the point, folks like to act like the Titans over-achieved with crappy personnel. This is just not accurate. In better coaching hands, Steve McNair could’ve been a Hall of Fame Quarterback. Eddie George was a legend coming out of college and ran for 10,000 total yards as an NFL back. Jevon Kearse was, well, the Freak. And, oh by the way, the Titans had the League’s best O-Line and D-Line coaches.
In fact, our old O-Line coach, Mike Munchak, is so good that when HE took over the team, he easily surpassed the performance of Fisher with basically the same personnel. I mean, you trade Collins for Hasslebeck, and that’s an upgrade. But how big? It’s something, sure. But we also lost Kenny Britt. And improved our record…
In any event, Fisher twice had the best team in football and got bounced from the playoffs in the first (Divisional) round at home. He stubbornly refuses to start young talent in favor of letting aging veterans stay on the field. And he wants to play HIS game, regardless of the actual strengths of weaknesses of your actual personnel.
So. I like the Rams, wish you well, and won’t mind if you do well. As any good Titans fan would, in my heart of hearts, I would like to meet you in the Super Bowl next year to avenge an old wound.
With that said, I want you guys to go into this with your eyes open. Jeff Fisher is a career .500 coach who’s had a LOT of talent over the years but still never gotten over the hump, thanks at least in part to some very good scouting from others besides himself. When he was given additional personnel control in Tennessee, it was a disaster.
In short, I think what your management wanted was the Second Coming of Marty Schottenheimer (full disclosure: I love Marty). But what you got is the Second Coming of Brian Billick, but with a Defensive mindset and no Super Bowl ring.
DannoE - January 14, 2012
There are plenty of Rams fans that agree with you.
I’m not overly thrilled by the signing. Not to say Fisher is a bad coach, but it’s as if he’s been heralded as one of the greats of the last twenty years, which is far from the truth. I’m not too fond of his demands for organizational control; it all reeks of a bit of arrogance. Nonetheless, after the brutal last many five years, I can understand some people being happy to just get a consistent 8-8 guy, because right now by the Rams’ standards that would be a remarkable improvement.
JStymie - January 14, 2012
Said the .500
Thing all along but thanks for the insight. Not overly excited as others and think he has been overrated and this proves it, but he has my support until proven otherwise..
RG31 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Fishers record is a 54.2 winning percentage I thought
I’m not a math major but wouldn’t this make Schottenheimer a god at about a 108.4%
dbcouver - January 14, 2012
Well...
From Wikipedia:
Jeff Fisher is 142-120-0.
Marty Schottenheimer is 200-126-1.
You’re right that that’s not exactly 2-1.
Look, like I said, I wish you guys the best. Personally, I would’ve hired Schottenheimer (who is looking for a job after winning the UFL Championship last year), but that’s just me.
DannoE - January 15, 2012
After dealing with Spaz and Linehan....Fisher is the second coming of sick Vermeil to us....
We had to get a proven leader who will “right the ship” an draft good personnel. While obviously the overall goal for all teams is winning a super bowl I just want to be competitive again. I want other teams to NOT want to play us for a change. I just want the rams to be relevant again. And while Jeff Fisher isn’t Lombardi….he will make us relevant again.

he has a lot of work ahead of him but i wish him luck
nothing worse than watching meaningless football games in december
so if next year we are anywhere near the ’"playoff scenerios "
i will applaud him

hello Turf Show Times
I’m a long-time Rams fan..I go back to the LA Rams Jim Everett/ Kevin Greene days..I’m new to this site in the past few weeks..wanna say hello and hope to be commenting often on a hopefully bright future ahead of us..
jerzymook - January 14, 2012 via mobile
Welcome!
How you liking the Jeff Fisher move?
Joe Mazzi - January 14, 2012
Yes!
He is a consistant winner..those Titans teams were always competative even without the most accurate passers..good running teams..good defenses..Not to mention that Fisher was a part of the competition commitee..he is very professional and thorough..this hire will bring positive results as soon as next season!
jerzymook - January 14, 2012 via mobile
A lot of us Titan fans...
…are completely befuddled by the excitement over this guy.
Most Titan fans were sick of the lack of winning seasons and the player cronyism that Fisher displayed.
One thing you can see here is the triumph of “brand marketing” over results. Fisher spent a lot of QT on TV, the competition committee, buddying up with he likes of Adam Schefter, etc. effectively cultivating the “Jeff Fisher” brand. You pay premiums for brands in this world.
I wish Fisher had been this smart as the Titans head coach. Nothing like fresh start. Kind of sets up a sitauion similar to here in Devner. They ran McDaniels out of town, but now can’t get enough of Tebow and Thomas, his first two (and initially derided) draft picks.
The Rams will do better next year – and Fisher will take the credit.
ColoradoTitan - January 14, 2012
well when you have 5 shit years (1 was ok, but the ending to it made it shit)
we’ll take an 8-8 record and a real shot at making the playoffs in this NFC West.
sergey606 - January 14, 2012
makes sense - everything is relative
ColoradoTitan - January 14, 2012
Exactly, but we find something to bitch about every year
So I wouldn’t be surprised if after 4 seasons we start complaining about Fisher’s mediocrity…or rejoice with a deep playoff run
sergey606 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
It's not so much about Fisher being the Messiah....
but about us finally having ownership willing to do dramatic things, to not accept 2nd or 3rd best. Like him or not Fisher is the prime prize of this years coaching targets. We got him when, in past ownership eras, we probably would have lost out to Miami. It is, of course, a destination city with a lot to offer a guy who has a family to think of.
The nature of the phone call from Kroenke on the night before his decision has a lot to do with my optimism. Apparently Stan called Fisher and sealed the deal with reassurance of the business structure. No team is being talked about relocating more than the Rams, and nothing seemed more important to Fisher than team stability, and we still got him. Our owner demonstrated a competitiveness we haven’t experienced from ownership in many, many years.
dbcouver - January 14, 2012
Accept your ownership
But hasn’t he accepted 2nd and 3rd most of his career?
RG31 - January 14, 2012 via mobile

RG31 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
It just occurred to me
Fisher was concerned with Rams moving and he came here…no move?
sergey606 - January 14, 2012 via mobile
I keep trying to tell you guys there is no way the Rams are moving. San Diego, no matter what they have said recently in the press, is the team that is moving to L.A.
I actually think the Rams are about #5 or #6 on the list of teams that could move. I also think the Cincinnati Bengals may be the team to watch as a move candidate if L.A. adds a second team down the road.
As far as Fisher taking the job being a basis for believing the Rams won’t move…? I think he just added a “moving clause” to his contract that pays him tons of money and gives him an out if the Rams were to move.
Douglas M - January 14, 2012
the no votes are all coming from bengals and dolphins fans
miami for losing fisher, bengals for probably losing zimmer to miami now.
palewook - January 14, 2012
Fisher,about time.
“I’ve been a head coach for 17 years and 12 of them sucked because I had to fight for what I wanted.”
He won’t have to fight for anything here, because Kroenke has given him ultimate authority to shape the future of the Rams. It is a page ripped right out of the book, “War Room: The Legacy of Bill Belichick and the Art of Building The Perfect Team,” that Kroenke says mirrors his beliefs on how winning franchises operate, and this is proof of that.
Fisher will map this all out. He will decide what this franchise’s personality will be, and there will be no confusion about it. The scouts will know what they are looking for because Fisher will tell them. Everyone will be on the same page, from top to bottom and for the first time in the history of the St. Louis Rams franchise we will know without a doubt who is in charge.
