Jeff Fisher is expected to fill out his coaching staff quickly now that he has accepted the job as the St. Louis Rams' head coach. Several names are being mentioned as possible hires. Peter King of SI.com reported on Friday that Fisher is expected to hire Gregg Williams as his defensive coordinator.
Williams is currently holds that same position with the New Orleans Saints. His contract there is up in February. Both Fisher and Williams are very familiar with each other. Williams brought his blitz-heavy approach to the Oilers/TItans from 1997 through 2000, while Fisher was the head coach.
For the Xs and Os inclined readers out there, Doug Farrar and Greg Cosell, the NFL Films guru, discussed Williams' approach on the Shutdown Podcast. The Saints blitzed more than any other team in the NFL this year. They also dropped eight men into coverage more than any other team. With two pure pass rushers like Chris Long and Robert Quinn on the roster, Williams could really have some fun with the Rams' defense in 2012.
Another name on Fisher's potential list, according to Jim Thomas, is Dave McGinnis, currently the senior assistant coach with the Titans. McGinnis came to the Titans in 2004 as the linebackers coach. He was promoted to assistant head coach the following year while keeping oversight of the linebackers. In his current role, he assists with the defensive staff as well as personnel duties, something to note with Fisher likely to have considerable say over personnel.

I'd like him, but he does look like an old lesbian so theres that.
HomerForTheRams - January 13, 2012
That is quite possibly the funniest observation I have ever seen.
With that visor, he could definitely pass for a field hockey or softball coach.
Pekka for Predator Pontiff - January 14, 2012
I love his aggressiveness
He will make that front 4 a much better unit, and put pressure on offenses. I’ve always been a big fan of Williams, lets hope it happens!
RamBradford08 - January 13, 2012
Williams would be a great hire for DC, anytime you can steal an assistant from a team like the Saints,Packers,or Pats...
for the same position then it is def. a good sign and should be an upgrade from last year.
jpcisco - January 13, 2012
Love Greg Williams D! This would be even better than having Fisher as the HC!
x Nightwing x - January 13, 2012
I thought for the longest time that Lovie Smith will leave the bears and come back to the Rams where he made us a legit defense
And that never happened……So Having Gregg Williams and his aggressive style with an emphasis on turnovers should do good with the players we have and the aggressive style we so desperately need.
SMASH44 - January 13, 2012
Man, that would be great. He has always been my favorite Rams coach. Shame he never got a chance to be our HC...
x Nightwing x - January 13, 2012
That D Lovie made was...
That D Lovie made for us was the cover 2 which was started in Tampa under Dungy and won a superbowl for gruden (it really was dungys superbowl team) gruden has done nothing in the NFL just like Mike Martz. You win one Championship with someone elses players and then it takes 5-7 years to get you fired….
fearsomefoursum - January 13, 2012
Something just popped into my head
Why the hell would he go from a recent Super Bowl winning team that’s still in the playoffs and setting records to the lowly St. Louis Rams? I just depressed myself.
HomerForTheRams - January 13, 2012
$$$$$$$
and Jeff Fisher…
m0pi1 - January 13, 2012
some coaches
like challenges and like to say they turned around a bad team
holtfan - January 13, 2012
Both money and challenge seem a little optimistic.
I guess I’ll just hope for the best and expect the most meh-est
HomerForTheRams - January 13, 2012
His contract is up at the end of the year.
jpcisco - January 13, 2012
What?????
You mean I might see St. Louis Blitz more than once a game???? NICE!!! what a concept!!!
fearsomefoursum - January 13, 2012
Uh...
obviously you don’t watch the Rams. We blitzed all the time the last three years
Brick Top - January 13, 2012
I do watch
If thats our blitz, good thing we getting new coaches cause I didn’t see it.
fearsomefoursum - January 13, 2012
Chris Long get 13 on Blitz packages
I dare say NOT!
fearsomefoursum - January 13, 2012
You weren't looking for it.
We blitzed, it was obvious we were. The problem with our defense was the secondary.
KeSt - January 13, 2012
The secondary
can cause issues with the success of the blitz.
KeSt - January 13, 2012
WE HAD A SECONDARY????
CRAP, WHERE THE HECK HAVE I BEEN! I thought they were all playing supporting roles on ER! or HOUSE or IR. just kidding……had to say it.
fearsomefoursum - January 13, 2012
Dude look at the stats
we were one of the most blitz heavy teams the last 3 years. Sorry you can’t identity a simple biltz when watching football
Brick Top - January 13, 2012
lol exactly..
i dont get this notion that we weren’t an aggressive defense..
We were super aggressive we just couldnt stop the run for shit
Bralidore - January 13, 2012
Saints give up a lot of points.
Hard to tell if Thomas would be better, given his experience. But Thomas knows his stuff
and hasn’t been the DC giving up tons of points yet.
Williams is established, but the Saints D is suspect.
Either one would be an Upgrade!
However, Blitzing with some “New Talent” would be a welcome surprise for us.
We’ll need more talent on D before we become successful at Blitzing.
look closer - January 13, 2012
A little talent at OLB would be nice. Who was the last decent OLB we had? Pisa?
DuhhhRams! - January 13, 2012
I would definitely like the Williams signing
And I swear if this day gets any better………..
TST, you’re making front page miracles today
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
+++++1
FIrst good news for Rams fans in years!
KeSt - January 13, 2012
Fisher will turn this Defensive unit around, to be one of the best in the league.
Thank God, we have a Draft Guru now with some competence……..Go Rams!
look closer - January 13, 2012
First response from my 9er fan buddy:
“I don’t look forward to playing Fisher twice a year. He always seems to put together a stingy defense.”
DuhhhRams! - January 13, 2012
That would be a great hire for the Rams.
Congratulations on getting Fisher. I’m just glad he’s not coming back to the AFC.
FreedomRide - January 13, 2012
Great hire
Love the im just not a fan of coaches having total control……. All RAMS ON NFL LIVE TORRY SJ39 AND KURT
SHAWN .B - January 13, 2012
Has Anyone heard anything about getting Bradford a QB coach?
Has Anyone heard anything about getting Bradford a QB coach?
I hope Fisher doesn’t lose sight of this, and let Bradford play a third season without one.
Ramanthan - January 13, 2012
You mean a second? And I'm sure Fisher won't make that mistake. As I've said I'm not his biggest fan,
but he doesn’t seem like a complete idiot.
HomerForTheRams - January 13, 2012
but he doesn't seem like a complete Josh McDaniels.
*fixed
x Nightwing x - January 13, 2012
Steven Jackson is ALL OVER
the NFL Network right now, and I am LOVING every second of it. BEAST!
Joe Mazzi - January 13, 2012
that would be sick
i cant wait to see how our D develops under the guidance of these 2
G unit Rams - January 13, 2012
Any speculation on the OC?
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
Dare I say
Todd Haley?
Joe Mazzi - January 13, 2012 via mobile
Oh shit.
RAMpage28 - January 13, 2012
Just a thought. I haven't a clue.
Joe Mazzi - January 13, 2012
Same here.
Todd Haley would be funny though.
RAMpage28 - January 13, 2012
He was a good OC. Don't really like him, but we can't get any worse...
x Nightwing x - January 13, 2012
You can have Gregg Williams
When you pry him out of my cold, dead hands!!!!!!!
:)
HollywoodSaint - January 13, 2012
Williams is a FA so it's not up to you guys LOL
apparently he wants to work with Fisher again. Last time he did, they went to a SB.
Brick Top - January 13, 2012
Do you think
His decision will hinge on how the Saints finish in the playoffs or, dare I say, Super Bowl? It would be a bold move to go from a SB-contending teamis to the Rams just for Fisher.
Joe Mazzi - January 13, 2012 via mobile
At this point, it seems he really, really wants to work with Fisher
but winning the SB could easily change his mind
Brick Top - January 13, 2012
Really? Has anyone seen his defense?! Just sayin!
leadhead - January 13, 2012
I saw it in Super Bowl XLIV
When he helped hold Peyton Manning to 17 points.
Joe Mazzi - January 13, 2012 via mobile
Are either of those good?
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012
I saw it this season hold one of the NFLs most anemic offenses to 31 points.
leadhead - January 13, 2012
All we need to do is score TDs at will then
and we’ll be straight
DCRamFan - January 13, 2012

Our defense saved the game. Darian Stewart pick-6
Joe Mazzi - January 13, 2012 via mobile
Oh right, my bad, let me Restate - I saw it this season hold one of the NFLs most anemic offenses to 24 points!
Actually I am just horsing around. I think he will actually turn out to be a good pick with the players the Rams already have on defense.
They are good at blitzing already. Getting the safeties back in the game of taking chances and picking off passes will make this defense feared! While I like Mikell and I think he is a more sound safety, I think this defense missed Atogwe’s ability to turn the ball back over to the offense.
leadhead - January 14, 2012
I think the Saints weak defense is due to the fact that the team spends way more of its money on offensive players so he has to make due...and he does which makes him a good coach to choose.
leadhead - January 14, 2012
They're not 'bend don't break'. They're crazy... in a good way.
x Nightwing x - January 13, 2012
OC
I’m more interested in who we get for OC. Who are the names out there?
jmo53 - January 13, 2012 via Android app
Don't the Saint have to give the Rams permission to interview Williams if it's a lateral move?
Da Rams! - January 13, 2012
Contract's up after this year.
Or maybe I misunderstood the question…
x Nightwing x - January 13, 2012
Ahhhhhh... that might be why.
Da Rams! - January 13, 2012
Rather have Jax DC
Mel Tucker. But he just committed. Would have been a huge, huge upgrade over Williams.
81 Witness - January 14, 2012
It aint happening
SI or Peter (no nothing King) can say what they want
Williams turned down interviews with 3 teams last year for HC jobs
His reasoning was he loved the way the Saints play offense
He has nevered played with a QB like Brees and he wont go to a team unless they have a QB of his caliber
He is good friends with Fisher but he is also good friends with Sean Payton who gave up $250,000 of his own salary just so Williams would come to NOLA and he remembers that
Good luck on who ever you find just look else where
mississippisaintsfan - January 14, 2012
Good points...also, if it were me...even if I had the slightest itch to go somewhere else, I would wait until the season is over.
If the Saints go to or win the Superbowl, his stock goes way up.
leadhead - January 14, 2012
It would appear, at this juncture,
that you’re incorrect.
Sorry about the playoff game, sincerely. Those are the losses that rip your heart out and light it on fire.
