For a team that's won just 15 games in the last five years, the St. Louis Rams seem to have been awfully close to relevance. A week 17 playoff play-in. A popular pick to win the NFC West before the 2011 season. We've been on the precipice.
When Stan Kroenke took over the team, it was a move from concern for financial readiness to market and competitive dominance - a move well explicated by Bryan Burwell on Wednesday. With that move came a need to make a statement to the competition that the Rams are no longer a joke of a franchise.

We're no longer a team that's searching for a post-GSOT identity. We're not led at the top by a reluctance to pull the trigger on big moves, something that people repeatedly criticized ex-GM Billy Devaney for. Regardless of whether or not you "like" the hire, no one can argue that Fisher was the marquee hire here, the most experienced, most respected, most prepared option for teams looking to fill their head coach vacancies. And the Rams got him.
So what should we expect? That's hard to say. Many people will try to suggest that the nature of Fisher's personnel management both in-game and out will apply to the Rams. I'd disagree. He's smart enough to know that you can't smash a square peg into a round circle, and the Rams and his Titans teams just aren't the same shape. There are two things you can expect, though:
- Yelling. Fire. Balls. Emotion. Maybe the one thing that coalesced Rams fans against Steve Spagnuolo, a coach so bereft of emotional displays that the Pope told him to bring it up a notch.
- League-wide respect. Behind the curtain, players, coaches and executives know which teams, which guys are a joke and who's biding their time before taking their looming demotion. That's not the Rams anymore.
We may not make the playoffs next year. Or 2013. There's too much that's going to change for this team between now and the first preseason game of the 2012 season, so it's pretty stupid to predict any win-loss results in the wake of this hiring.
But people are going to pay attention to the Rams. They are going to take us seriously. Teams are going to respect us.
And if that's the only thing Jeff Fisher brings to the Rams, then that's a hell of a step in the right direction.
(UPDATE: This headline shows the statement was received from local media. That was quick...)

Best post...
This is the best post I have read on here in quite some time. 3k, you hit it on the head. The identity that we have lacked will now be displayed. Not as a powerhouse but, as a team not to be taken lightly, the St. Louis rams are here to stay and we will welcome any opponent that takes the field against us. Side note, Courtland Finnegan just said on 101 he would be willing to come here. I will take a plate of nasty, with a side of punch Andre Johnson in the mouth!
Ramrocker - January 13, 2012 via mobile
I think Finnegan's comments
were indicative of the power of this hire. Big momentum move. Going to be interesting to see how this franchise runs into draft season.
3k - January 13, 2012
Right on the money!
For all the negatives with Fisher, we know what we’ll be getting. That, to me, is better than again treading into the unknown and hoping for success. The team will have a definable identity, and the Rams fans now know that Stan is committed to building a quality product. We should all be excited!
mcihaelT - January 13, 2012
It will be interesting to see how quickly things progress now.
I read in one of the many posts during the waiting game that Fisher already had his Assistants lined up. How quick will they move on a GM now? Does it narrow the candidates because they have to answer to Fisher, or expand the field so they can work with him? There is still a lot to be played out, but with the biggest piece of the puzzle in place, it should start happening fairly quickly now.
David5264 - January 13, 2012
Anyone that uses the word - explicated - correctly in a great post like this gets my vote! Great Job 3k! Rec'd

VTramsFan - January 13, 2012
But is this making a marquee move for the sake of making a marquee move?
I just don’t feel like Fisher is a marquee head coach, merely a decent/good coach who had perfect timing.
Eric Nagel - January 13, 2012
Would this move warrant so much publicity if Cowher or Gruden returned to the sidelines?
Probably not.
Joe Mazzi - January 13, 2012
Ill take Jeff over both Cowher and Gruden he is a more rounded and better HC IMO
Rammon105 - January 13, 2012
Um no not at all
maybe gruden maaaaaaybe
Seal Clubbing - January 13, 2012
What I think of is the players he'll sway when they are making FA move decisions. I think we've missed out on a few FAs in the last few years because of the vague future the Rams presented
Douglas M - January 13, 2012
Agreed
Fisher has been overrated and I hope he can see that we need offensive playmakers in a bad way.
RG31 - January 13, 2012 via mobile
Fisher is over rated? Please give it a rest
Rammon105 - January 13, 2012
By this site and the media he is
RG31 - January 13, 2012 via mobile
And most people hes outstanding at being average
Seal Clubbing - January 13, 2012
could be to a degree
but I guarantee the players see more in it than that. It’s not marquee in the sense of stock, but in the sense of experience. And that’s more valuable than the “hot hire.”
3k - January 13, 2012
I agree that he's probably not a marquee coach.
But I hope he becomes one for us.

We have some that love to troll – but overall, we aren’t that bad.
I’m just really glad this whole ordeal is over. Now, we can move on looking for someone, and you guys can get used to Fisher. Now, just trade us the second overall pick, and we’ll call it square.
Kevin Nogle - January 13, 2012
sounds good to me
just give us two of Long, Pouncey, Marshall, or Vontae , plus number 8 and you have yourself a deal lol

I'd like to see you guys get Chudzinski now.
He was my next choice for the Rams had the Dolphins landed Fisher.
Joe Mazzi - January 13, 2012
He's been my favorite since Sparano was fired.
Rumor is that Dave Toub, the special teams coach of the Bears, is the front runner now.

"Steve Spagnuolo, a coach so bereft of emotional displays that the Pope told him to bring it up a notch"
My first LOL of the day. Thanks 3k, I needed that. As far as Fisher goes, let’s hope he doesn’t mellow out in his old age. The team needs a collective shoe in the butt.

Spags was hardly mediocre – 10-38 over three years… and lying to the press? Spags never needed to. Those softballs were easy to answer truthfully.

Can’t wait to read your draft stuff this offseason. Should be interesting all the way up to the draft.
Pekka for Predator Pontiff - January 13, 2012
oh okay lol
I have a ton of respect for spags, I guess I’m just happy to see a guy with some experience on the sidelines. Thanks I’m really excited for the draft too lol it will definitely be interesting.
Josh Wehrle - January 13, 2012
I'm OK with replacing Spags with Fisher too.
He’s definitely got experience in spades :)
Pekka for Predator Pontiff - January 13, 2012
really?
I though you preferred to keep him?
Josh Wehrle - January 13, 2012
I did.
But he is gone now.
And Fisher is the best available replacement, so I can’t complain.
Had we brought in another inexperienced (as a HC) coordinator to replace Spags, I would have laughed and thought that we are continuing our freefall. But we didn’t and so I’m pleased that we got an experienced replacement.

Seal Clubbing - January 13, 2012

Everyone had there doubts on, weather or not we would sign Fisher, this is good news for Rams fans and it should be an exciting 2012 season
ray c - January 13, 2012
The one thing about Fisher's teams is that they are nasty and mean...
something that Spags would not have allowed. His team are always criticized for playing dirty, I love it! We need that in Stl. I also read, since the Titans moved to Nashville Fisher had the fifth highest win percentage of active coaches between them moving to Nashville to him leaving last year. Thats pretty darn good, I know a few people were bringing up his record as a coach but the 5th highest win percentage is good enough for me!
jpcisco - January 13, 2012
Exactly
All the people talking about his career winning percentage forgot the limbo years where the “tennessee oilers” were not even sure what stadium was going to be the home stadium the next season. Once they got settled though, they went right to a Super Bowl, and followed it with a 13-3 season. Coach Fish will do fine in St. Louis.

I think so
Josh Wehrle - January 13, 2012
Awesome.
I just hope we get Blackmon and Lamichael james!!!
did britt have concerns about him when he came out? Fisher does well controlling those with personality problems for the most part.
holtfan - January 13, 2012
I want a trade down
and Finnegan lol but if Britt didn’t have character concerns coming out (I think he did, but I can’t remember now) he certainly does now and I think he’s coming off of a torn acl or something
Josh Wehrle - January 13, 2012
Britt has run into some trouble
He got arrested for speeding (over 100) and running from the cops……also you are correct about him tearing his acl
holtfan - January 13, 2012
Who wouldn't tear their ACL running over 100mph from the cops?
dbcouver - January 13, 2012

holtfan - January 13, 2012
he's another guy I would want to take a shot on
if Tennessee want’s to deal him
Josh Wehrle - January 13, 2012
Yeah.
And there was a whole fuss about how Fisher never drafted a WR in the first round.
Joe Mazzi - January 13, 2012
I like this hire for the statement it made. It's one us longtime fans have been waiting for
I gotta say, it’s been a long time since an actual statement has been made. I can’t help but feel we stumbled into Vermeil with a lot of luck. Even John Robinson was a reach by grabbing out of the NCAA pool. All our coaches seemed more like we’ll take whatever the coaching pool coughs up. “Like him or not” is exactly right. I’m just glad to see us get someone that somebady else wanted so bad, and do so because he liked the situation here more. This is the kind of hope a new owner brings to our franchise. Thank you Stan Kroenke, from the bottom of my heart. whether Fisher works out or not is moot to some of us. I want it to work but it’s more than that. This is a sign of change we haven’t experienced in a while. I believe in ownership with a decision like this for the first time since Carol Rosenbloom died.

3k - January 13, 2012
3k, if Fisher doesn't get us in the playoffs in the weak NFC West by 2013...
then hiring him is a waste of good money. Rams fan should be expecting more than 6-10 and 8-8 seasons now. Fisher’s got to deliver. There have been shittier teams than the Rams that have turned the corner in shorter times with coaching changes. The Lions were in the playoffs this year, I don’t see why Rams can’t be in it in 24 months.
Da Rams! - January 13, 2012
O-line
What the Rams need is an o-line. Be glad you got Fisher because he believes in protection up front. Bradford and Jackson are being held back by weak o-line play. Expect draft picksmto fortify the offensive and defensive lines. If you guys draft a skill player high, its because he reeeeally likes them, or somebody else wanted them. Until you get that fixed, you will have issues.
Barksley - January 14, 2012
Fisherball
One thing you will hear from Titans fans critizing Fisher is “Fisherball,” which is the derogatory term for his overall strategy at Tennessee. Just remember this: in the AFC South, the road to the playoffs was paved through Indianapolis. You did not beat Peyton Manning and the Colts in a shootout. You ran the ball to keep Manning off the field, and tried to get pressure with 4 guys because Manning always picks up the blitz.
Now, Fisher has Bradford and Jackson. He can start building a team to do some shooting of his own.
