LSU star cornerback, Morris Claiborne decided to declare for the NFL draft today. He is the top corner back(CB) prospect in the draft by far and will likely be a top ten pick and could factor into the Rams' draft in April.

Undoubtedly, the Rams are in desperate need of help at corner back. In 2011, the unit underperformed to say the least. This was mainly due to injury as the Rams' top three corner backs entering the season, Ron Bartell, Bradley Fletcher and Jerome Murphy all were put on injured reserve. Instead, the Rams had to depend on players like Justin King, who weren't ready to play that big of a role in the NFL. Furthermore, many of the backups went down as well, with the Rams ending the year with 10 total CBs on IR.

A review of the Rams current situation at CB now and a brief scouting report on Claiborne after the jump and also 3k's thoughts.

Star-divide

Some help will be provided in the secondary with players returning from injury, but will Fletcher, Bartell, and Murphy all come back and play at the same level? That's unlikely. Ron Bartell has been fully cleared to return to action coming off a neck injury, but Fletcher coming off his second ligament tear in the same knee is a question mark right now. The same is true for Murphy who suffered a broken ankle.

It would be a pretty safe bet that the Rams will make a move at cornerback in the offseason. Whether this would be through the draft or free agency remains to be seen.

If the Rams want to go the route of the draft, Morris Claiborne has to be considered. Now, the Rams shouldn't draft him second overall, but with the Rams likely to trade down he could still be picked by the Rams.

The Browns, who are picking 4th, and the Redskins, who are picking 6th, have been two teams that have been rumored to be possible candidates to trade up to select Heisman Trophy Winner, QB Robert Griffin III. Picking in one of these two spots would allow the Rams to consider drafting Morris Claiborne.

Claiborne's talent is undeniable. Mocking the Draft thinks he is as good as or even better than fellow LSU Tiger and top 5 pick, Patrick Peterson. He is a prototypical NFL CB. He has good size, long arms, great ball skills, and he can play press coverage very well. He has the potential to be a shutdown corner in the Nnamdi Asomugha role.

The Rams can sure use a corner with the skill set of Claiborne, but would they want him over an offensive tackle like Matt Kalil or Riley Reiff or Justin Blackmon at WR? That remains to be seen, but if the Rams do trade down in the draft, they will have to consider picking the talented corner from LSU.

3k had this to say:

I'm not entirely sure that Claiborne won't have the stock to validate going second overall in the draft come April. As Brandon notes, his size is spot on. I think one of the keys may be his arm length; they often look gangly on tape. That's a good thing. If his wingspan measures well at the combine, it's going to have a lot of people feeling even better about him. Yes, the Rams would still likely hope that they can move the #2 pick for a collection of spots to shore up multiple positions; but don't count out Claiborne as a wild card option when the Rams are on the clock.

NOOOOO!!!

Bigger needs..

How do you rank the needs?

I think people put far too much stock in needs on one position versus another. Right now, I feel like in terms of team needs, we have the highest degree of need at three positions: OG, CB, and WR. As long as we get true top talent at one of those three positions, I don’t care which it is.

No we have 3 CBs that will be coming back

You’re neglecting our 2 biggests needs, OT and WR, were neglecting the offense for the 2nd year in a row, its idiotic and setting Sam up for failure.

To be fair

we didn’t neglect the offense last year. We just did a horrible job of paying it proper attention.

Needs

Score td’s, score td’s score td’s. We need a playmaker, Blackmon please

I wasn't sure

Until I watched the bowl game. Now I’m a believer. Blackman, a wr with an attitude trumps all other needs.

Thank you!

I think some have forgotten that Sam is the franchise and in order for this franchise and him to succeed is to surround him with talent. If you don’t he was a waste of a draft pick.

This really, really makes me happy.

Going back three weeks or so, my biggest honest concern was that the Rams may accidentally screw themselves by trading down; e.g. trade down to say the 5-6 spot for picks, and then miss out on Kalil.

Right now, assuming we trade down, Claiborne adds another high need pick available.

Not with the number 2 pick

But if we trade down to say number 6 and he’s still there we should think about it

I think if we can't trade down and are stuck at #2, Claiborne is a solid pick.

I think he is among the “Can’t lose” draft options with Kalil, Decastro, Blackmon and Martin

I've heard that he's actually a better all around cornerback prospect

than Peterson. You just won’t see him scoring any special team touchdowns.

Hmm

I think I’d rather go with Kirkpatrick… The kid has just as much upside and is bigger… Very physical and a great tackler, though I think both are great and will be NFL stars.. I’d consider both very thoroughly when drafting (if we move down).

My question is....

When are we gonna get a true return man? PR and KR. Think Demps in the later rounds could fill as change of pace rb and KR and do great at both, he’s also not so shabby in the passing game i believe.

But anyways, if we get a cb, its only if Blackmon is gone. for me i have my priorities rated as…..#1 wr, #2 OLB/Interior linemen, #3 CB.

Go free agency

Isnt Cortland Finnegan a free agent or someone else I want that receiver.

Any chance of us getting Finnegan

hinges on Fisher’s decision.

Do we have the guap?
What did you just call me?

Seriously though, if we cut loose some dead weight, we would.

Lol

I wouldn’t mind clayborne honestly. You a fan of jeff fuller?

Is he the next revis or nnamdi to anyone else?

I would consider it. Maybe take WR jeff fuller in the 4th or 3rd

I have watched Claiborne very

closely this year and although he is a talented cover guy I was not impressed with his tackling. I agree that we go WR or OT with our 1rst pick and am good with getting our CB in the 2nd or 3rd round with Minnifield, Boykin, Gilmour or Trumain Johnson.

If we keep our 2nd pick or trade down and get the Browns pick at #4, our pick should be Blackmon.

Alot of corners cnt tackle lol

I want kalil then blackmon. But we dnt have a shutdown corner

Lets get the

Honey Badger in 2013. That kid can tackle!

He so small tho
Cliff Harris CB, Oregon Ducks 4th -5th Round.

Harris was dismissed from The Ducks in October. His infractions with speeding and “alleged” cannabis consumption( LMAO!!!) may place Harris as a late round draft pick or possibly an UDFA. Excellent cover guy that creates turnovers. He is an outstanding PR. Big Risk/ Big Reward type of prospect. IMO Harris is worth the risk.

My kinda guy Valdez

Big rewards work for me

NO!

We need a #1 WR, LT, 2 DT’s, 2 OLB’s much worse.

Aaron Dobson! lol He's my 7th round dark horse WR

If we pick 4th take Kalil/Blackmon. If we trade with the Redskins and he is still there at 6th I’d take him.
