All day Wednesday, it was reported that Jeff Fisher was leaning toward the Miami Dolphins over the St. Louis Rams. The reason cited most often were Fisher's concerns about the Rams potential relocation. It may be simpler than that, it may be more about money and power.
According to a report from the NFL Network, Rams owner Stan Kroenke has yet to display a willingness to make Fisher one of the highest paid coaches in the league, something that would require a salary around $7 million per year. The Dolphins and owner Stephen Ross may be willing to give Fisher something closer to $8 million per season.
Fisher is also likely to be named an executive vice president of whichever team that hires him. That title would put him higher up the food chain than the general manager. He's said to prefer the organizational structure of the Dolphins, but it isn't clear why since he'd have the title to run the show almost any way he wants.
Now that salary numbers are being thrown out and a decision has yet to be made, it certainly looks as though there's a leverage game going on here, even in the absence of any formal contract negotiations.
Concerns about a potential move are still cited as a factor in Fisher's thinking, but there could even be some maneuvering on that front.

If Kronke isn't willing to pay him that much
that’s a good thing. He’s a good coach, but no way is he elite and he doesn’t deserve elite coach money.
Brick Top - January 11, 2012
Nobody's worth what they are paid in the NFL
Time for Kronke to put up or shut up. If Fisher is the best choice pay him. If not tell him to F off and face the music… ain’t it ain’t going to be pretty.
Sggladden - January 11, 2012
Yeah, but you still aren't going to pay Roger Saffold elite OT money
there still is a system of value that has been put in place, and paying Fisher $8 million doesn’t’ come close to fitting that system
Brick Top - January 11, 2012
My sources say Fisher will be in a Rams shirt by noon time friday
Rammon105 - January 12, 2012
Agree
I like Fischer but c’mon in reality 16 years in one organization and how many Super Bowls has he won? Well needless to say the closest he came to a win was 1 yard and that didn’t even work.
BurnoutJoeB. - January 12, 2012
So the miami reports
Could be fisher trying to force kroenke’s hand?
Ram_Redemption - January 11, 2012 via mobile
This is just too much.
Under no circumstances should Fisher be paid that much or be given that much power. They’re just begging him to rip their franchise apart. The LAST THING that I want in the Rams new HC is someone who can straight up tell our GM to shut his mouth in the draft room. I’m practically at the point where I don’t even want him anymore. Rob Chudzinski all the way!
Joe Mazzi - January 11, 2012
I'm feeling the same way
Chud for 2012? Sure, that signing wouldn’t irritate me.
Ramrocker - January 11, 2012 via mobile
I'm starting to lean towards the same direction
Brick Top - January 11, 2012
This is how I've started to feel today
Askibg price is getting too high
King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Its pretty amazing what looking for a job at the right time will do for an OK coach
LARams1968 - January 11, 2012
I'd offer him $5-6 million a year
but not increase from there and just let him walk if that’s not good enough
Brick Top - January 11, 2012
I couldn't care less about how much money Kroenke gives him.
What bothers me is the amount of control over the franchise that he’s likely trying to command. It’s like he wants the power and respect of Bill Belichick. That terrifies me.
Joe Mazzi - January 11, 2012
That is also a concern
Brick Top - January 11, 2012
and he also basically wants to run the team
And have all the fans’ daughter as his slaves

$7 MILL a year for a coach? F*** NO!
Russel Ginart - January 12, 2012

Ya he isnt elite, but another coordinator might cost him 2 million in tickets….Im torn!

If he can bring us greg williams and other nih time coordinaters
Pay him
Ram_Redemption - January 11, 2012 via mobile

Besides, Fisher is already overrated.

King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile
If he is in it for the money i say fuck him
we need a coach that wants to coach the team, not one that wants big money.
UsArmyRAM - January 11, 2012
Good god.
$7 mil a year is completely insane. Completely and utterly insane. Either this is a mountainous load of disinformation coming from the Dolphins, or I’m perfectly fine with moving on to Chud or Rick James.
I’ve got a strong feeling that this may just be total bullshit.
FailureDrill - January 11, 2012 via Android app
Glad I'm not the only one who feels that way
I was never the biggest fan of his in general. I just felt the Rams needed an established coach for a better turn around time.
I’d love to go for a coordinator who’s young and up and coming. That just leaves us with a bigger gamble since you don’t know what you’re going to get out of a coordinator.
KDidz - January 11, 2012
Horton?
King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Just because Tomlin was a similar interview, doesn't mean that Horton even compares
Brick Top - January 11, 2012
Tomlin made the Vikes the leagues #1 rush defense
The Cards defense was hardly turning heads.
Joe Mazzi - January 11, 2012
Giants stopped Brady and Moss
Howd that coach work out? Sometimes it’s the game adjustments and not just the stats that matter for a HC
King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile
I still like him better than the other candidates
Something to be said for a guy who didn’t just have the best year statistically
King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Who knows?
Really what can we tell about these guys after just one year coaching their respective teams. I don’t know that much about either guy to be honest but Horton clearly didn’t have a great defensive year statistically for AZ. Stats aren’t every thing and the only games of theirs I watched were against the Rams and every D looks good against the Rams.
Chud had a great year in Carolina obviously but it was his first year there. He also got a hot young QB. So who helped whom out? Is it mutual? What about the previous 2 seasons as OC for the Browns? We don’t know if he’d keep that up.
The problem with a coordinator is you just don’t know how they’ll turn into a HC. I’ve said before Spags was the hottest coordinator when the Rams hired him after he didn’t pan as an HC.
What are you feeling? Keep some defensive focus or hire an offensive coach who will take care of Bradford?
KDidz - January 11, 2012
Boom, brick said it best at the start
Why pay him that much money, when he’s not really an elite coach?
I respect Kroenke for not throwing money at him like the phins….and they are coming off as desperate for doing so
sergey606 - January 11, 2012 via mobile
I didn't think that getting him would require a pact with the Devil
King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile

Ok you guys kno more than me chyd
chud or horton.. Who ya got?
Ram_Redemption - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Preferably Chud.
But both are my fallback options at this point.
Joe Mazzi - January 11, 2012
Horton
I’ll take the guy cause I like the idea of the guy who got the job in the interview (intangible stuff) and not just what his players put out on the field for him. I’d take either really, but prefer Horton
King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile
I like chud
Just cause I want an offensive minded coach and I like what he did with steve smith
Ram_Redemption - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Good point, and I like Chud as well
But I’m not sure how much I want to entrust a guy who had access to Cam as HC because of his offense play calling

Randy Moss smoking weed makes him too effective.

LARams1968 - January 11, 2012
Chud. Period.
The thought of us adding two more needs to a draft class because of a defensive switch makes me want to gouge my eyeballs out. We already learned via McDicksuck that you get guys to fit your personel, not fitting players into a scheme that they aren’t built for. If that’s the case I will take Carriker back because he fits the five technique like a mother effer. Let’s get an offensive mind who likes to run the ball. Chud! Chud! Chud!…. Because Horton will make me wanna Chug! Chug! Chug!

HA!

Lol no. Cowher = Chin
Joe Mazzi - January 11, 2012
Cowher dissapproves.
RAMpage28 - January 11, 2012
Bill Cowher = Worthy of $7-8 million
Jeff Fisher = Worthy of $4-5 million
Joe Mazzi - January 11, 2012
Jim Harbaugh with 0 nfl coaching experience got somewhere around 6 mill
Fisher is worth about 7/
RAMpage28 - January 11, 2012
I think Fisher is better then Cowher as a HC
Rammon105 - January 12, 2012
Spittle seems more appropriate

douchiedude - January 11, 2012
Same here.
Fisher wants power and money but the amounts of both are outrageous.
RAMpage28 - January 11, 2012
I mostly disagree with the Bill Parcells power trip thing
He’s an avg to above avg coach. No way does he warrent total control fo the front office. I understand why he wants it but I wouldn’t give it.
LARams1968 - January 11, 2012
When was Bill Parcells brought up?
RAMpage28 - January 11, 2012
Wanting total power to make decisions is reminiscent of Parcells.
Parcells was a better coach though and highly persued when he was free to take new jobs.
LARams1968 - January 11, 2012
Saying Fisher wants "Parcells with the Cowboys" power
King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Parcells is one of the best coaches ever and could turn trash into treasure so to speak.
RAMpage28 - January 11, 2012
He wants "Shurmur with the Browns" power.
douchiedude - January 11, 2012
Shurmur only got that job cuz his uncle was Fritz.
RAMpage28 - January 11, 2012
Hah yup,
he has no power. I was just messin’. It’s all Holmgren over there.
douchiedude - January 11, 2012
Fritz should go to the bengals, lions or panthers
So he can be Fritz the cat
LARams1968 - January 11, 2012
That would be cool.
RAMpage28 - January 11, 2012
I'd say
he’s pretty well above average, but he’s not even $5 million above average, let alone $8 million. Pay him or let him walk, either way it’s fine.
douchiedude - January 11, 2012
John Harbaugh is being payed like 5 mill
Is Fish worth 3+ mill more? No
King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile

LARams1968 - January 11, 2012
No he isn't
Harbaugh West > Fisher
King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile
Not by track record/longevity
Haurbagh took over a team loaded with talent but with a dysfunctional coaching staff. He has done a great job with them but needs a few more years to be compared to fisher.
LARams1968 - January 11, 2012
I still wouldnt pay Fisher 3 mil more knowing how good Harbaugh is
King Sam Rules! - January 11, 2012 via mobile
If a newbie can be paid $5 mil per year
An experienced coach with a proven ability to succeed is woth more.
LARams1968 - January 11, 2012
Harbaugh didn't also get to own the franchise and bang fans' wives
Thats part of Fisher’s negotiations

ALL HAIL THE LOS ANGELES RAMS PART 2
This was the litmus test. The Rams offered Jeff Fisher equal money to that being shown by the Dolphins, the Rams have a franchise calibre QB in Sam Bradford in place, excellent cap space. the #2 pick in the draft and also JF was going to be able to choose his own staff. The ONLY thing Fisher demanded from all the rumors I hear is that Stan Kroenke give him a promise that football was a long term deal in St Louis, he didn’t want to go through another upheaval the way he had to when the Oilers moved from Houston to Tennessee. It seems that Kroenke counld’t give him that guarantee. This is a GREAT day for all Los Angeles Rams fans.

lil_smokie60 - January 12, 2012
Did you even read this article?
The part about $7 million a year and an insane amount of power? And once again, I’ll say it for Brick Top: Fisher not signing does NOT mean the Rams are moving, and likewise if he signs- it doesn’t mean they’re staying.
The Chargers are now on a year-to-year lease, starting next season. They’re a stronger possibility than the Rams, so tuck your boner away. Remember: Dean Spanos is the fuckwit who didn’t fire his egoistical buffoon of a GM or his inept, underachieving head coach.

kronke is a cheap fucking bastard
he is an owner that has never won a championship since the first year he owned the avalanche so see you in La. Guess he learned to much from sam walton. Scab loving prick

Kromer
I will take a guy with some toughness. I think Kromer could have the same effect of this team that Cable did on the Raiders. Not sold on Horton hears a who. Any coach that has a name in a Dr Seuss movie should not be our HC. Chud had a one year wonder with a top notch athlete. He was a TE coach in SD where he had Gates. I would like a coach with some toughness this time around. I say set up a cage and let them fight and whoever walks out is the HC. Whoever walks out second is the DC and third the OC and fourth ST.

Fisher isn't sold on St. Louis
So I think if he doesn’t make up his mind by this afternoon, you call him and say no thanks. And you move on to the next best candidate
riotmute - January 12, 2012
The good news is
he isn’t sold on Miami either.
Regardless of how this shakes out, I’m glad to see the brass lining up other candidates.

I think
Stan is reluctant to spend the big money because he knows it’s going to take more than a HC to turn this around. If we were last years niners where you had talent and guys just needed coached up then maybe. Say what you want about Spags and I supported him because he did get the team to play hard. Obviously playing hard doesn’t always equal wins. I do agree perhaps he wasn’t HC material but this team still lacks talent. Fisher migh have squeaked out a couple more wins last year but is that worth the money. I think not. If you want to make top pay you better be sure you put together a contender year in and year out. I would make his contract worth 8-9 mil but it is all 50% incentive based. X amount for each win, X amount for playoffs, X amount for playoff wins ect.

Hmmm...
Okay. Now we’re hearing Fisher may want more cash ($8 million) and more power (executive VP). Maybe he’s beginning to price himself out of a highly lucrative market. That’s more salary and power than Billicheat currently has with the Patriots. With those sorts of demands I’m sure Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy, and/or John Gruden can be pried from their seats in the broadcast booth to coach this team. I like Fisher, but the fact that he’s making this a reality TV event is starting to rub on me. Before I make him a pie in the sky offer, I’m going back to one of the 3 coaches mentioned to see if they’ll take it first.

All I can say is: Well played Fish
He’s got Stan by the balls. It will probably cost more in the long run to not hire him now. No way any of those other proven coaches are coming to the Rams.
I hope Kronke doesn’t take things personally and take a big chance on another unproven coach. What’s an extra million in the grand scheme of things?
Sggladden - January 12, 2012 via mobile
I like Fish, but now he's being overpriced...
and I say Miami can have him. Theres still options out there that can be had cheaper with HC experience. For instance, there are head coaches in the college ranks with NFL coaching experience. Fisher doesn’t have the same resume as Bill Cowher or Bill Billicheat. Why pay him more than those guys? No need to get in a bidding war over a coach that couldn’t win a SB in 17 years with his last team.
Da Rams! - January 12, 2012
If I'm Stan, I'm starting to take option 'B' a lot more serious...
Better than overpaying a coach who’s biggest feat was losing a Superbowl over 10yrs ago. And it took a Music City Miracle during the wild-card playoffs for him to make it there.
Da Rams! - January 12, 2012
I was going to bring that up, but glad you did Da!
He should NOT command such a price tag, his resume says playoffs games and one SB apperance. Is that worth $7-8 MILL @ year? IMO………NO!
Why is Brian Bilik still NOT coaching? He sits in the NFL Network with Faulk, Warner, Sapp and yet does not coach? Why not look into him as Rams HC?

For what
it’s worth the phins fans at the Phinsider are thinking along the same lines as us. They are growing tired of Fisher and his premadonna ordeal. One guy says it’s going to be on prime time ESPN tonight just check the listings under The Indecision.
RWRAMS28 - January 12, 2012
History to repeat itself?
Fisher going to take his talent to South Beach? Does he know that the guy who last did that will never win a championship in South Beach?
81 Witness - January 12, 2012
You got it!
RWRAMS28 - January 12, 2012
I say the Rams just hired somebode else.
He’s a good coach but he wants to be the highest paid? Get out of here.Maybe if he had some super bowl rings. or mayb he’s still bitter he lost to us in super bowl XXXIV and whats taking so long to decide? Almost a week to decide between two teams?
